A good reminder with the holiday giving season ahead.

THINK BEFORE YOU DONATE

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
BEFORE YOU MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS:

As you open your pockets to do a good thing and make yourself feel good,
please keep the following facts in mind:

-----------------------

I did a search for the one on Goodwill and there web site says this is not and never was true. The e-mail came out about 5 years ago and gets re-circulated every holiday. Forbes magazine comes out with a list of charities and how they rate as far as percentage of money going to the cause. You can also look this up at snopes.com and they have a full article about the mostly outdated and inaccurate statements made on the list.

Thank you! I did look on snopes but did not find it. I would love the comparison by Forbes if that is available.

Personally, I always vet a charity before I donate to see how much of my contribution will go to programs. I pretty much can any which pay phone solicitors. I also like to give to local charities or those whose funds stay local and which will never be on the Forbes List. They tend to have lower overhead and better accountability to their donors. And I am quite sure that there are plenty of very needy people right in my backyard.

Thank you Sharklover... I agree about local charities. And thank you for the Forbes list...not sure if tells you what % of the money collected goes to the cause...unless I am not reading it properly.

Steve can you help find the ratings you referenced so that we can correct the list of charities? :thankyou:

I think that is what they mean by fundraising efficiency Kamala. What percentage of each dollar goes to programs. Charity Watch is pretty good for fact checking charities too.

I seriously do ban donations which are solicited by phone. For SO many reasons. Not the least of which is that they are using donations to pay the third party phone solicitors. And I generally listen to them and then tell them exactly that.

I like The Wounded Warrior Project: http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ & The Fisher House Foundation: http://www.fisherhouse.org/ for all that they do to support our Wounded Warriors and their families. I have seen what these organizations do first hand at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for all our Medical Evacuated (MEDEVAC'd) Wounded Warriors. Posted Image

Volunteering is sometimes the best donation you can make to an organization. Some of these outfits have enough $$ but not enough people to keep it going!
