DOJ okays American-USAir merger into world's largest airline

The US Department of Justice has agreed to allow American Airlines and US Airways to merge into the world's biggest airline, though they must scale back their operations in some big cities.

The settlement requires approval by a federal judge, but eliminates the need for a trial, which was scheduled to begin Nov. 25.

American and US Airways must give up some slots at Reagan National and LaGuardia, and cede gates in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Miami to low-cost carriers.

They also will maintain the US Airways hubs in Charlotte, Philadelphia and Phoenix, and the American hubs in Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, Miami and JFK, and for three years.

The companies expect to complete the merger in December.

Passengers will not see any immediate changes.

The two airlines likely will combine their frequent-flyer programs and honor each other's elite status.

The combined company will offer flights to 336 destinations in 56 countries, making it more attractive to corporate customers.

I have noticed traveling to some of the Carribean Islands. The schedules are shrinking to a point of sometimes you get layovers, overnite.Harder to get to your destination on the same day.If they squeeze their # of gates.I'll be curious to see if the end result ,is LESS flight selections.
As for any monopoly.I don't really care, who owns who.I'm sure we would all like better service,(on time) flights.

I'm sure we'll have less flights as AA and USAir will no longer compete against each other. When United and Continental merged the number of flights went down and the price went up... no more competition. However if AA goes out of business then how much competition will we have then? And our own govt places such a burden on the airline industry via taxes that they also prevent competition.

Its a changing world we live in...

Its good for DC where some competition at Reagan will be good.

The hub I see missing from your list is American at DFW.

George,
Thanks for that story.Every day it seems we lose sight,(excuse the irony) ,of any common sense .A little respect/understanding would have solved that issue..
