Because my knees will be jammed up against the seat in front of me, it will not be possible for that seat to recline.
Not my choice, that's just the way it is.

A lot really depends on the airline and the seating arrangement. On the United flight recently it was "economy plus" which has a little more leg room so shouldn't be too much of a problem to recline. Common courtesy goes a long way here though - if someone is working on a laptop and you see it then check with the person behind you to see if reclining is a problem for them. If the flight's not full you could also ask to be seated somewhere else too so a lot of options before jamming the seat or throwing water at someone.

For me I need to recline to lessen the pain I usually have in my leg (comes from a muscle cramping that hits my sciatic nerve).

I agree about common courtesy being the key thing. Yes you paid for your seat but I paid for the area behind it so I don't like people reclining in my lap. It's really bad at meal time, for those flights that still have meal service. Sometimes flight attendants ask people to move their seats forward during meals and sometimes they don't. I don't let it ruin my vacation either way.

My take:
You have a right to recline.

The person in front of you has the right to recline.

Get over it.

At 6 foot 3, I struggle to fit into the seat. My knees really don't fit, and I usually have no option other than to stretch them out, so they are under the seat in front of me, and not restricting that seat from reclining. On my last flight, I did have the woman in front of me trap my iPad when she reclined her seat. I politely asked he to sit up for a moment, and then told her she was fine to recline. As I have back issues, I need to recline my seat. I always do it shortly after take off. I first look behind me to make sure no one has a computer out, recline my seat, and then confirm that all is good. So far, every one has said fine. I am not sure what my response will be when I finally encounter someone that says no. As for meals, I always sit up at that time, so as to not interfere with the person behind me. To me, it is all part of flying. I see my choices as accepting the uncomfortable seats and being a bit squished, paying a lot more money for first class, which I can't afford, or not flying.
