Hello,

I will have a few days in Bali in March, and I am looking for some suggestions on what to do and see while there.  Initially I figured that I would do some diving, but the more I think about it, the more I am leaning toward doing some land based things.  For those that have been there, and thoughts are appreciated.  Thanks.

Ed

Hello Jerry,

I am definitely diving.  This is a make up trip fowr the October Maldives trip that I ended up missing out on.  My sister and I will be heading to Komodo for ten days.  We have several days in Bali prior to the diving, and I am trying to figure out what options we have.  I was going to book a couple of days of diving there as well, but the more I looked into things, the more I am leaning towards seeing Bali from the top side.  I am thinking that we will ride the elephants one day, and do a two day Jeep tour around the island for the other days.  Then it is off for diving.  I just figured I would ask around a bit first to see if anyone had any suggestions.  Worry not.  My account wasnt hacked.  Ed

We went in 2009.  Bali is tricky for diving since the island is big and the sites are so spread out.   Your best bet for planning a quick dive is to check out balidiving.com and they also have land tours so that may be the most efficient route all around.  They have day trips to all of the sites. Tulamben, Nusa Penida, and Manta point are definitely worth it.  But they will be Full days out of your schedule.  I would see the island first since diving there is a bit of a safari.  On the other hand it is a bit of a tour just to get to the dive sites so maybe site seeing can be combined into the dive travel.  We spent 4 hrs on a bus going to w and from Tulamben which at the time was not accessible by boat due to currents and depth... it is very shallow.

Having done it once, if I did it again I think I would start with Balidiving.com.  Kamala works with these people so she can set it up for you.

Definitely suggest you do the Liberty wreck at Tulamben - check out the fan on the starboard side of the bow for a pygmy seahorse, plus other critters abound on this site. Definitely do this site from a dive boat, the boulder covered beach makes walking difficult, except for the mama-san carrying your gear, and the native out rigger boats [gunkung] aren't easy to get into from the water [I 'rolled' a rib]. There's a resort [Paradise Beach Bungalows & Dive Resort?] on the beach 1/4 mile from the site, you can stay there, then do the dive in the morning prior to the day trippers arriving. I've done a night shore dive from the resort which was great!!! I also have the contact info for a dive guide, I met on a liveaboard in 2013, who guides on Bali. I'm sure can can help you with other sites on the island, not just those on the SE shore & possibly some land based options. PM me if you want her contact info.
