I am surprised that this has not been posted here.

1956 shipwreck claims life of Houston diver

As many of you know, the Andrea Doria wreck, off the coast of New England, is considered the Mount Everest of Diving. It is not a dive to be undertaken lightly as the depth starts at about 190 feet, it is cold and dark down there, and you have to contend with currents and fishing nets that have gotten tangled on it. It is certainly not a dive I want to undertake but I know guys who do.

I personally did not know Terry DeWolf but I do know a couple of people who did including the dive shop owner who was mentioned in the story. Please join me in offering my prayers and condolences to Mr. DeWolf's family

Unable to make Mitch's link work - here is one from the local Long Island paper. It really is a sad thing - our thoughts are with his family.

From the accompanying photo, it appears he is a user of the Dive Rite Optima Rebreather. I wonder if he was using the rebreather when the accident occurred. That might complicate efforts to determine what went wrong.

I was reading about the story when I saw a mention that Jacques Cousteau himself once make a dive on the wreck. When he came back up, he said he would never return. That right there should say something.

I have also read unconfirmedreports that the diver was using an Optima at the time of the incident.
