REMEMBER...ALL TRAVELERS NEED TO BE PREMIER MEMBERS OR ABOVE & HAVE DIVE INSURANCE TO JOIN OUR AMAZING TRIPS!!!

Location: Bocas del Toro, Panama
Dates:      October 11-18, 2020
Resort:    Dives Paradise
Dive operator:  Bocas Dive Center
Water Temp: low to mid 80's
Air Temp: 80 - 90F
Current: Mild especially during the months of Sept & Oct
Visibility: 60 to 90 feet (some sites allow for the glimpse of large pelagic animals which are attracted to water full of krill and other food supply.)

Experience Level:

Intermediate suggested for this trip BECAUSE while Bocas has numerous sites for absolute novices and certifies scores of new divers, many of the most unique and different sites require better dive skills either due to unique topography or deeper conditions or possible currents. Current is minimal during Sept and Oct and several sites are ONLY diveable during this time.  More novice divers can join the group and just may opt to skip a dive that exceeds their training, skills and/or comfort levels. The unlimited shore diving is extremely easy diving and we can also make arrangements for more novice divers to do an alternate itinerary if conditions allow for us to dive some of the more exotic and unique sites.

Known For:

The largest biodiversity of any place in the Caribbean including species endemic to only this area. Exciting large pelagic surprises such as nurse sharks, an occasional dolphin or school of devil rays.  Various species of octopi, toadfish and seahorses.

You can fly into Panama City via many of the major airlines including AA, United, Delta and others.

  • Once in Panama city you can either stay a day or two and explore this modern and ancient historic city or you fly directly to BOC catching the last flight at 5pm. You will need to arrive in Panama City by 2pm to make the 5pm BOC flight.
  • Email trips@singledivers.com with DELAYED REROUTE TO PANAMA in the subject line and text 864-557-6079.  I will keep the hotel apprised of your arrival time to arrange a pick up.
  • If you are at the airport with no driver waiting for you, take a taxi and ask the front desk to pay the driver. If you encounter any issues, simply pay and GET A RECEIPT and I will have it refunded.

GETTING TO BOCAS

You can get to Bocas from either Panama City Panama or from San Jose Costa Rica. You can then transfer by bus rental car or air to Bocas. See the airport info below for full info on each of those flight options.

For those that are adventurous or wanting to save money or just see the country you can consider going by bus or rental car. Each will be an extremely long ride but the specifics of how to do it this way are listed below.

Getting there by bus from Panama City:

  • Save money by taking the overnight bus from Panama City to Almirante that takes approximately 11 hours. Be prepared for strong air-conditioning. After getting to Almirante you will take a Water taxis from Almirante to Bocas which run every 30 minutes from 6:00am to 6:00pm.

Getting there by rental car from Panama City:

  • We are checking to see if you can rent a car and drop it in Almirante before taking a water taxi to Bocas. We will advise if this is an option.

Getting there by plane from Panama City:

  • See airport info below

Getting there by bus from San Juan Costa Rica:

The port of Almirante is 280 km away from San Jose Costa Rica, then the island is just a 25 min boat ride from there. If you have to stay the night in Costa Rica we recommend you stay in one of the hotels near the airport, Wyndham, Marriott, Ramada, etc.  To move around San Jose we recommend using Uber.

If you want to split the trip in two days try to spend the night in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. It is a very  nice caribbean town which is worth checking out.

  • Many clients and staff have used Caribe Shuttle (there are other private shuttles).  Their price includes lunch, help with crossing the border and boat transportation to Bocas del Toro.

Save money by taking a bus from different locations in Costa Rica to Almirante, Panama.  In order to enter Panama, you are required to show a flight reservation showing your departure.

  • Transportes Mepe  (www.mepecr.com tel +506 27580618) terminal is downtown San Jose and they have buses leaving direct to Sixaola border at 6:00 am8:00 am10:00 am2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. it takes around 5.5 hours. The price is about 11.00 usd one way.

Once at the border the procedure is the same described in the rented car section.

Getting there by rental car from San Juan Costa Rica:

  • Plan your trip to not leave San Jose later than 11: 00 AM in order to have plenty of time to make it all the way to the island.

Keep in mind that Panama is one hour ahead of Costa Rica and that the border closes at 18:00 Costa Rican Time and the last taxi boat to the island leaves at 18:30 PM

The only company that allows the car to be dropped at the border is Alamo. Tel +506 2242 7733 and when you do the reservation you must tell them that the car will be dropped at the border Sixaola and tell them the dropp off time. it costs around 100.00 usd for an economic or 160.00 usd for a large Toyota

At San Jose‘s International Airport there is a free +506  27500579shuttle to takes you to the rental company. From there you have to set your destination Sixaola (which is the border between Costa Rica and Panama) 250 km and usually is driven in 4.5 to 5 hours.

Once at the border you leave the car at Mayelas parking and give the keys to the parking staff.  They will charge you one dollar.  In case you drop it off at a different time call Alamos office in Puerto Viejo and let them know +506  27500579

The border procedures takes around 20 min, although sometimes there are lots of people and can take up to an hour.

Once in the Panamenian side you can take a taxi to the port of Almirante (40 km and its done in 1 hour)  which price should be around 30.00 usd for a private or 10.00 usd for a shared bus.

At Almirante you have to take a water taxi to the island which takes around 30 min. Tell your driver to drop you off at TAXI 25. They leave every 30 mins and the price is 5.00 usd.

Once on the island you walk to your left towards the port or ask anybody direccions to La Buga, we are 400 mts away from Taxis 25 office.

Getting there by plane from San Juan Costa Rica:

  • See airport info below

VISA/PASSPORT INFORMATION

Please note that A U.S. passport valid for at least 6-months from the date of entry is required to enter Panama. Though not required by law, some travelers have reported difficulty departing using a passport with less than six months of validity beyond the date of departure. A visa is not required, but tourists must provide evidence of return or onward travel. U.S. citizens are encouraged to carry a photocopy of their U.S. passports with them at all times, so that if questioned by local officials proof of identity and U.S. citizenship are readily available. For other global citizens, please review applicable visa requirements posted on the Internet.

TRIP INSURANCE:
Trip Insurance is STRONGLY SUGGESTED and/ is NOT required on this trip! TRIP insurance is RELATIVELY inexpensive. Even if you have insurance that you think covers your trip…it is CHEAP (approx $100-$200) to get a supplemental policy to ensure you are covered for your investment in your dive trip. If you opt to not get trip insurance you are responsible for all losses related to your trip including not going for any reason. If diving a LIVEABOARD please consider the liveaboard rider offer by DiveAssure.com.

We recommend:

Dive Assure: for either a 'one time' policy OR an annual policy for BOTH Dive & Trip OR just Trip Insurance providing PRIMARY COVERAGE with excellent rates and coverage! Please use THIS LINK and/or reference SingleDivers.com via the drop-down menu under GLOBAL PARTNERS. (If you can not find the drop down, do not reference anyone and email info@singledivers.com your policy info and we will do it for you via our Dive Assure company representative. OR SIMPLY USE THIS LINK AND YOU WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY TIED TO US. )

Diving & Itinerary:

DIVING

Due to its isolation from large cities, river mouths and thanks to the fact that Bocas del Toro is outside of the Caribbean's Hurricane Zone, the reefs of Bocas Del Toro in Panama have some of the best preserved hard and soft coral in the world. Bocas del Toro is home to 95% of the coral species found in the Caribbean Sea, with many unique and endemic species to our area. The waters are inhabited by a wonderful variety of tropical reef creatures including nurse sharks, stingrays and many species of crab and lobster. We also have dophin and mobila rays visit from time to time in the deeper waters. When you dive in Bocas del Toro, besides all the species of colorful tropical coral, you may see spotted drum, snapper, rat fish, sea horses, moray eels, nurse sharks, sea turtles, rays, vase sponges, starfish, lobster, and several species of toadfish. You'll see fish not typically seen in the Caribbean and that list goes on and on.

Diving conditions are excellent year round, especially for training, with the best times to scuba dive being February, March, May, September and October – during these months sea conditions are flatter allowing access to more remote dive sites. Regional visibility peaks during the Caribbean's Dry Season: from February to April and during September and October.

  • The dive dock is located at the hotel and extends out almost 30 yards to the reef. Tanks are available on these docks for shore divers.
  • We limit each boat to a maximum of 18 divers for comfort and safe dives. There is a lot of room to walk around and plenty of shade. This also helps make surface time more comfortable for two tank dive trips.
  • We GUARANTEE 60 min boat dives if you can safely reach that time within the constraints of your computer and gas limitations.  The shops will otherwise recommend on the two tank morning boat dive trips, 45-50 minute bottom times and average recommended depth of 50-70 foot. WE DO NOT LIMIT YOUR DEPTHS.  A surface interval of 60 mins or more will be provided. THIS IS WHY YOU DIVE WITH SINGLEDIVERS.COM...MORE BOTTOM TIME & FREEDOM TO DIVE AS YOU LIKE!!!
  • All the boats feature a wide swim platform, which makes it easy to leave and return to the boat. For the hardcore divers, back rolls or giant strides are possible off the sides of the boat!
  • Each of our local dive masters have been with us for many years and are well-known and respected in the dive industry. They ensure a safe experience while keeping things fun. Our fleet of dive boats is the best on the island, and provide a level of comfort and convenience unmatched on Panama.
PROPOSED ITINERARY:

While our personal Panama Experience may vary due to weather and conditions, the outline below will give you a good feel for the exciting week in store for us:

Days Prior can be spent in Panama City or San Jose Costa Rica.

Alternatively you an also arrive early to the hotel or stay later. (Let us help with your resrvations)

October 11, 2020: This will be the official ARRIVAL date in Panama. Plan to get a bite to eat and get some sleep.

October 11 - 16, 2020:

  • Each morning we SD will do two tank dives off the boats (dives start at 8:45 am until approx 12 noon).  NOTE we will have to pull this in if we want to get our (2) one hour boat rides and get back for lunch timely so you can DIVE DIVE DIVE via the shore the afternoon!)
  • Breakfast, lunch & dinner is included daily and is available at 7:30am on premises. We will give you complete meal times closer to the trip.
  • Each afternoon/evening SD Happy Hour takes place - don't forget to bring a bottle of your favorite booze(s) from Duty Free!  NOTE: Drinks are high at the hotel so we will have our own Happy Hours with mixers either from the local grocery store or via the bar and then adding our own DUTY FREE PURCHASES!
  • Daily Dinners will be included in the pkg. at the highly rated Pier 19 restaurant onsite.
  • If we have enough for a boat night dive it is usually slated for Tuesday evening. If we have enough for a "Guided" shore night dive it will be either Tuesday or Wednesday. Ad hoc night shore diving is avail as long as we have 2 divers.
  • We hope to have other events in the evening to entertain you including live music by the hotel.
  • Each afternoon will be clear for the variety of cool things you can do in Bocas or to dive via the unlimited shorediving option or by signing up for extra boat dives.

October 17, 2020: This day will be free for activities and sightseeing or just cleaning gear, packing and relaxing. IF you wish to dive an extra day... let us know as many flights MAY allow for diving on Friday before leaving. Remember DAN says 18 hrs after repetitive diving days so its now 18 hrs vs 24 hrs.

October 18, 2020: Official Departure day unless you have purchased additional nights.

DIVING INSURANCE:

DIVE Insurance is required on all trips! DIVE insurance is VERY inexpensive. Even if you have insurance that you think covers DIVING ACCIDENTS and air lifts…it is CHEAP (approx $100-$125) to get a supplemental policy to ensure you are covered for an entire year of diving.

PRO TIP; The two primary suppliers of dive insurance DiveAssure.com and DAN are inexpensive enough to carry both. This way you will have the best coverage internationally, the best coverage domestically, primary insurance, secondary insurance and if a claim is denied on one policy you can submit it on the other. No matter what happens...YOU ARE COVERED!!! ... PRICELESS!!!

We recommend:

Dive Assure: for either a 'one time' policy OR an annual policy for BOTH Dive & Trip Insurance providing PRIMARY COVERAGE with excellent rates and coverage! Please use THIS LINK and/or reference SingleDivers.com via the drop-down menu under GLOBAL PARTNERS. (If you can not find the drop down, do not reference anyone and email info@singledivers.com your policy info and we will do it for you via our Dive Assure company representative. OR SIMPLY USE THIS LINK AND YOU WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY TIED TO US. )

Alternatively you can also use....
Diver's Alert Network: Please use our reference number when ordering: ID1603080   (This only works if you are a new first time DAN member.)

Experience Required & Training/Workshops:

  • Minimum Certification / Experience: Panama is suitable for most divers. If you are a newer diver you should check with trips@singledivers to discuss your concerns. (Our customary "Rent A Buddy" program is not avail on this trip because all the dive mentors want to be free to enjoy this amazing diving!)
  • Certification in Paradise - there are no SingleDivers.com training activities nor workshops currently planned for this trip but Instruction / Classes are available on this trip.  Please let us know what you are interested in and we will check with the resort about doing training during your trip and what they would charge. Often they will give us a better price so feel free to ask us to assist.  If you would like us to help arrange additional training for you, simple click in the SUPPORT tab in the main menu and then click on SUBMIT HELP TICKET and click on TRIP ADMINISTRATION and request assistance.

  • We will also check to see if any of our trip participants are instructors who would like to teach on the trip and let you know.  We are glad you are interested in continuing your dive education and we hope we can help you continue your goal of ongoing training.

PRICES: Prices for classes in Paradise are always more expensive than doing them at home. Sometimes SingleDivers.com has instructors on our trips who are happy to teach AND usually offer a member discount to anyone interested in taking a class. HOW TO PAY:

  • As you sign up for a trip you will add either the trip deposit amount or the full trip price to the shopping cart. You can also add any extras you wish to purchase but you will have to pay for them whenever you sign up for them. So if you are not ready to pay for nitrox now but want us to know you will be adding it to your order...please use the comment box to let us know ultimately what you are signing up for and any other special concerns you have or information you want us to know. Just understand we will not show you listed as doing something until it is paid for.
  • When you are ready to pay for the extras you want you will click on the BOOK NOW button for the trip you are on and select the add-on(s) that you wish to pay for, add them to your cart and then check out. Depending on the trip you may need to click on the purple TAKE ME TO THE ADD-ON'S BOX. You will then either pay via e-check or credit card depending on whether you want a discount for cash or prefer the convenience of payment over time.
  • When its time to make a progress payment you will click on MY TRIPS under TRIPS on the main menu. You will see "Make a Payment" under PAYMENTS in the upper right. Then choose what you are paying for and complete your payment.
  • After each order you place with us you will receive an email order and payment confirmation. If you do not receive these TWO email confirmations (one showing the order at full price and one showing what was debited from your account including the cash discount) check in MY PAYMENTS to see if the payment was successful. If you do not see the payment in your My Trips then MAKE THE PAYMENT AGAIN. You will always get an order confirmation email every time you attempt an email but you will ONLY get a Payment Confirmation email when your payment was successful. If you need assistance please email .
  • The MY PAYMENTS section is located under the PAYMENTS option found in the upper right of the MY TRIPS area of our site which is found under the TRIPS tab in the main menu.

Insurance, Documentation & T&C's:
INSURANCE

Trip Insurance is STRONGLY SUGGESTED and / is NOT required on this trip!

OR SIMPLY USE THIS LINK AND YOU WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY TIED TO US. )

DOCUMENTATION
All SingleDivers.com trips require necessary documentation to facilitate booking your trip and/or making it a better experience for you.  Once you complete your documents online our automated system will take the information from your last trip with us and fill out your new trip forms for you. You then add any missing information and/or change anything that is no longer current. You will find the forms you need to complete under MY TRIPS which you will find under TRIPS in the main menu across the top of the site. Since each trip requires a unique set of docs, please choose the correct trip from your "My Trips" drop down and then complete the forms required for that trip. Some trips will also ask you to complete the resort or liveaboard's forms as well.

The AIR AUTHORIZATION FORM is only required when you are having SingleDivers.com book air for you but this includes air that is part of the trip pkg price.

Not all of our forms are online as they are either infrequently used or being phased out. If you need a form that is not in our online directory, simply click on SUPPORT on the main menu and then click on SUBMIT HELP TICKET and choose TRIP ADMINISTRATION and ask for the form you need.
