The subject of IMs and Chat rooms have surfaced on SD in the recent years. I think we can do it ? its just a matter of how many divers are interested in it ?

Great Suggestion tho :P

My take on the IM's and chatrooms is that you lose any historical information.

Conversations are held and not stored. I know there are a lot of people who don't log on every day and they would lose out on a whole lot of fun because it would be all over and done with and no way for them to take part.

Think about it - how often have you logged on to see a newbie bring up a 6 month old thread with some really great comments? It happens a lot.

I think IM is great but don't want another account or window to keep track of. Already have one on AOL, MSN, Yahoo and Google. Accounts on all 4 of these sites are "free" so replicating them here doesn't make a lot of sense.... to me. Using them here could be interesting especially if you do the conference feature (seen it in YIM).

I read in the paper last week that Yahoo and MSN (<-- think it was MSN) are planning on linking their 2 systems making it possible to IM a person on one from the other.

Also, if you do have multiple accounts, want to log messages (copy on personal computer), and add features like encryption, look at a program called GAIM. If you want to load it on a memory stick and go from computer to computer to IM, look at portable GAIM. It is "freeware" like Firefox.

We have the Chat module, but don't count on it being turned on Real Soon.

The biggest problem with the Chat is that it's totally uncontrolled. If someone gets obnoxious or offensive, there's nothing we can do about it except to disable the module (if one of the Admins happens to be online). Since they're trying REALLY HARD to make sure this is a safe and friendly place for everyone to visit, I doubt the Mods and Admins will feel comfy enabling it. Nobody wants to spend time monitoring the Chat module.

In the regular forums, you *might* think twice before posting a rude comment. Probably not if it's real-time and you know it's not stored.

I haven't asked, but that's my best guess on why it's not used.

BTW, I'm only a short-term 'technical' Admin here, not one of the 'Guiding Lights' of SD. :banghead: I'm just here to fix some broken stuff 'cos I have the free time. My opinions are purely my own, and occasionally rub other folks raw. I truly appreciate not being called a 'stroke' with every other post, though. Whatever the reasons for not enabling the Chat, I support 'em!

my understanding is that the Chat feature requires alot of server bandwidth, which is precious to begin with

Hi Dad +2. I am on the IT team for SD and I made a suggestion for a chat based room on SD. I will be protyping one and showing kamala. (That is not in the board module .. that one is not that good and you cannot admin it like Desert_Diver was talking about). Granted it cant exactly be monitored all the time but the persons user ID will be tied into its use. If we cant trust our members to behave themselves they shouldnt be here anyway. Each chat room also has a log so we can see who said what and when and can post the logs for history sake, etc.

I personally think it would be a great feature instead of hitting reload every five minutes to chat.

I am seeing a lot of myths on here, and other posts regarding technology and SD and I hope I can explain in a pratical and logical manner just how wrong they are.

No, actually it is not bad at all unless we have over a few hundred people in the room. Like any software it depends on how it was written and if the designer knew whatthey were doing.

No Worries JackBSwift

If we got paid for posting on SD we would all be millionaires.

IMs could be a way to have some interactive fun tho :birthday:
