This will probably be a very good member, with good insight to some of the issues at hand today.

I believe the name is already taken.

As bad as I hate soap boxes, I am going to get on one for you. Please forgive and indulge me.
As President of a Dive Club in South Florida for 5 years, I always preached DAN, if you dive and do not have DAN insurance, you are not exercising good judgement. But I did not always put it in those deliacate terms. I was in the Bahamas last weekend on a live a board dive boat for my annual Birthday Bash with some of my friends. After the first day of diving, I had settled down in my bunk listening to Patsy Cline and hoping the tunes and the gentle lapping of the waves would soon put me in bed with the sand man. However, I had forgotten to go to the bathroom and decided to go upstairs and take care of that little problem. But, as I entered the salon, I found one of my friends on the floor, wrapped in blankets with an O2 bottle feeding him full time. Imagine my surprise! What happened I said. He had a severe case of skin bends, this friend who had been diving longer than I and one I looked up to. He had gotten out of his bunk dizzy and had his roomie call for the captain. So, quickly they put him on O2. According to the captain, the last time one of their passengers had a similar case, O2 made the symptoms disappear, he walked out to the dive deck later, collapsed and almost died. Even changing bottles had an an adverse effect on him.
Anyway, I asked if DAN had been called and was informed he had no DAN inurance. By that time, a coast guard helicopter was on the way and he was evacuated. Thankfully, the 3 to 4 bottles of O2 had taken care of his problem. At the hospital on land, the Dr. discharged him and thought a few more hours on O2 would have been sufficient. Some of us questioned that decision, but he is the doctor. So, what could have been a real emergency, was averted by the right decision and actions by captain and crew. It could have been a real disaster. Two more hours could have passed and it may not have gone right, and that would have been two more hours from land and a chamber.
To get back to DAN, I asked him why no insurance. The renewal had come in the mail, he had not expected to leave the country, and just forgot to renew. This decision could have had drastic consequences.
So, I will get off my sandbox, it is so simple. IF YOU DIVE and DO NOT HAVE DAN!!!, there is no excuse!
You should have it, I do and never forget about renewing.
We all have choices, what will your be?
If you have any questions, please PM the Orcaman
