I have seen this happen many times in my open water classes. Usually it is a husband pushing his wife to dive- sometimes it is a boyfriend. Although I am sure this happens, I have never seen a wifre or girlfriend push her husband or boyfriend.

I can count two times were a woman pulled me off to the side in tears to tell me how much she did not enjoy diving, but did not want to let down her husband because he wanted to vacation in the Keys and hunt lobsters.

My conclusions are simple. If you sig other does not want to dive NEVER push them. I think this is about the most uncool thing one can do. My expereince has been that is has nothing to do with showing someone how cool it is underwater, but a selfish act to get a convenient dive buddy.

Hell, go bowling together, or play volleyball, or landscape or whatever.

I saw this in my ow class. It was pitiful. Neither diver was certified, guy was hell bent that his g/f continue even though she was in tears after the POOL session. She was hysterical and petrified by the time we went on the first boat dive, and needless to say, didn't finish the course. I felt so bad for her. No boyfriend is worth THAT!

It definitely happens - I'm the one who made my ex-husband learn! I was the one who was hell bent on learning to dive and he could have cared less. Needless to say, when we went on our first dive trip, I was the one diving everyday and he was golfing, sailing, on the beach... Hmmm, I think I am starting to see where our incompatibility began! :-D

I've had somewhat of a reverse of that situation. I've had some feel that they needed to dive so that they could use that as a vehicle to lure me in. That did not turn out to have a happy ending.

I got certified after getting married, she said she wanted to dive but had frequent panic attacks. Second wife said she enjoyed boating, sailing and wanted to dive while we were dating. See Howards comments above about luring. Truth was she was affraid of the water and never got past the pool sessions.
That's why I'm here!

When my wife started asking questions about where the fish go to the bathroom, I knew there was no point in pushing any further.

She wasn't going to buy my argument that they all went to the Mobil station. :)

Wait just one minute!!! You've got Mobil stations underwater in the NE???? Are you absolutely certain about that? My gawd, the competition must be horrible up there.

My X was the one who wanted to try out Scuba. Although I've always loved the water, I didn't think I would be able to Scuba dive. Neither of us were certified. We tried one of those resort dives while vacationing in Cozumel. I was hooked from the first dive. I tried to get him to go with me for our C cards after our vacation, but he always had some excuse why we needed to wait. I was certified 6 months after our divorce.

My wife dived with me during two vacation dives. When I got certifed, she said we did not have enough money to both do it. Now when I ask her she says she has no desire to. I have no plans to push the issue on her, That's why I have sons....... LOL ... I think diving is one of those things you have to want to do. Just the Idea of breathing under water is tough for some people let alone all the other things you need to think about.

Oh yeah! In 1998 I moved from SF Bay area to Dallas - to live with a guy. He said he wanted to become a diver, so he got OW certified. Did it in 2 weeks (my class took 8 weeks and open water was in Monterey! BRRR!)

We went on 2 dive trips together and he was a real hazard to dive with. He had no desire to control his buoyancy or even to propel himself at all!

Our last dive was when he had a panic attack because he had 500 psi in his tank at 35 feet and ditched his regulator, then tried to breathe off my inflator hosethinking it was an air2 while I was going for my octo for him - HE PUSHED MY INFLATE BUTTON and we of course went rocketing upward!!! I got us stopped at 10 feet, and onto my octo but I was really upset!

I reamed him out on the boat about AGI and DCS and so on - and the fact that he had plenty of air, so all the drama was not necessary, I made the decision that we needed to not dive together again.. He has since found out he has heart problems and will not be diving. We have since parted ways romantically (not because of diving) but are friends. He sometimes takes care of my dog when I am on dive trips.....

I now have 2 female buddies with whom I plan trips, and sometimes I go alone - of course SD.com will change that as well.....

Donna basically forced herself to learn how to dive because I wanted to learn. It took her a year to get through the 6 week course. Having your brother as the instructor is priceless. Donna has become a very good and very safe diver. As soon as she made her first reef dive, she was very motivated. What a beautiful and interesting world there is under the sea.

I would absolutely LOVE for Janet to learn to dive but it's just not her thing :twist: so every once in a while I show her the exciting things about diving and snorkling (as she rarely does this too) in the hopes that somewhere along the way it'll tweak a nerve as it did in me. If it does, GREAT, if not, she is perfectly ok with me diving and I'm ok with that, it truely has to be HER decision or it won't be a good experience. (I don't eat lobster so she does get all them bugs! :teeth: )
