Question: Were you ordered to evacuate? I remember when I was in the Keys with my son, we were ordered to evacuate so when I called the airline to get a flight out, I didn't have to pay a change fee. If there's not an official order, the airlines make you pay for a new flight? I wonder if trip insurance covers all of the expense.

No we were not ordered to leave the island. We all made independent decisions to leave as it became apparent that we had a cat 4 almost a cat 5 storm approaching us and was not veering off. People took any flight that they could. If they have trip insurance some of it or perhaps all will be covered. If they did not then what price do you put on your life?

Not to sound crass but those who booked direct tickets on any carrier they could got out the soonest for the least amount of money. Those who tried to get their original flights changed fared the worst either getting disconnected or losing precious time as the hordes of people started flooding the carriers with change requests.

Well, that's good information to file away for the future, but I hope I never need it.

As WW said, there wasn't an order, but the island was on a Tropical Storm Watch.

I am probably in the worst case. No trip insurance, and booked 2 one way trips on different airlines, and used a 3rd airline for our trip out on Saturday.

As far as my situation, currently my airline on the return trip considers people who were in the middle of a round trip or flying on the dates of August 18-22 to fall under their weather related exceptions. My one way on the 24th is considered neither.

So I am out the $100 change fee for the airline. I was lucky enough to get a very cheap one way on Saturday (being up at 6 am helps), that total will be $400.

But for the piece of mind of not being there for the storm, that's getting off very cheap.

You know, I keep thinking of how much my airfare to Australia cost so my frame of reference is skewed right now. :banghead: I mean, if I had to pay almost $2,000 to fly out of Mexico, I think I'd take my chances with Dean. :lmao:

I'm back!!!! At least in the states. I'm waiting for my flight from ATL to Houston. There was a crazy lady on our flight from CZM to ATL that got taken away by the Feds when we landed. She kept moving to and from 7 different seats, was loud and rude, would not directions from attendances. I finally told her she was scaring me and to sit down and be quite. That lasted about 5 minutes. I did not turn my back on her. She said she was a pilot and a doctor and she was hired by the FAA (although she couldn't tell us what that stood for or show credintials). Oh, and it was her birthday. Is it a full moon or what?
I'm tired.
:banghead: :lmao:

I did have a great time with you all!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Phyllis: Have been thinking of you all day. Glad you are out! I guess that feeling of being caught in a bizarre "David Lee Roth video" (Think, "I ain't got nobody") continued all the way to the states! Glad to see you have kept your sense of humor about it all. I'll try to post some pictures soon and I hope you will too, as yours were great!
