DAN offers web-based seminars to allow the diving public to learn about diving and dive medicine in the comfort of their own home. The presentations are open to the general public at a cost of $25 US. You will receive a certificate of completion from DAN. There are currently four online seminars available as follows:

Breathing Underwater is an Unnatural Act (Approx. 60-90 Minutes) Posted Image
Diving is easy under ideal conditions, but life on dry land doesn’t prepare us for the underwater environment where conditions can be far from ideal. How these conditions affect respiration and consciousness is the subject of this presentation.

Diabetes & Recreational Diving: History and New Guidelines (Approx. 45 Minutes)
This presentation includes the new guidelines for diving with diabetes as recommended by that panel. It is based on a presentation written by Neal W. Pollock, Ph.D. He is a research physiologist at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Medicine, Duke University Medical Center and a member of the Research Department at DAN.

Inert Gas Exchange, Bubbles, and Decompression Theory (Approx. 60-90 Minutes)
This presentation, based on a presentation by Dr. Richard Vann, Vice President of Research at DAN, addresses some of the fundamental principles that govern inert gas exchange between the environment and tissue, and in particular, the profound effects that bubble formation can have on inert gas exchange. These ideas are placed in a historical context to show how decompression theory has evolved and how this has affected DCS severity.

Pathophysiology of Decompression Illness (Approx. 60 Minutes)
Dr. Richard Moon, Senior Medical Consultant to DAN, presented this lecture to a recent Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine course offered by DAN. It features audio clips of Dr. Moon explaining issues including patent foramen ovale and the mechanical damage caused by gas bubbles in the body along with the history of decompression illness research and current research into ways to treat injured divers.

Ears and Diving Seminar (Approx. 60 Minutes)
This seminar, based on a presentation by Dr. Frans Cronje, is designed as a primer on how the ears function and the things divers must do to take care of their ears. It is not a program intended to make anyone an expert on ears. What it does do, however, is help divers understand their ears and what is happening when they dive.

Please post a report here if you particpate or have participated in these online seminars!

How did you find out about these? Do they have different ones (change the mnue) over time?

DAN has added a new online seminar to their current list (as posted above):

And I realized I hadn't answered SDM's question above. My apologies. These online seminars are found on DAN's website under DAN Training & Education. I came across them when going through the site and came across the new one when renewing my membership today.

Please post a report here if you particpate or have participated in these online seminars!

I did the Ears and Diving one. Decent information. However my biggest gripe with them is that you can't go back once you've finished without paying. I haven't bothered with another because of that issue.

please elaborate a bit.

how does this work?

do you just pay, watch a presentation/video, finish and get an e-certificate?

and thats it. nothing to come back and refer to, no 'hand-outs' or anything?

I'm interested, but your issue causes me some concern too.

If you are a DAN member all the information AND the courses are listed on the DAN website. If you go there you will find all the information listed concerning the courses listed on the previous postings. They also have instructions on how to take and pay for the courses

You pay. go through the coursework (video, webpage, etc), finish, take an online test, and get an e-certificate. Nothing to go back and refer to; no hand-outs.

I contacted DAN about this, and their concern is people going through, and then allowing others to use the course materials without paying themselves. A legitimate concern, but the path they take to guard against it makes the course not worth taking, at least for me. I like to have some type of reference beyond my memory when I'm done learning something, be it a textbook or handout.

If you're interested in seeing what they're like, "Diabetes & Recreational Diving" is a free one. The others all seem to be $25.
