Prenups are legal in Texas - the basic package lawyers offer keep everything separate - no community property is created, but they can be customized from there.

Not that I'm jumping in on getting married. I used to think it was strange when couples kept things separate, but I did find out it can be a very smart thing to do. People have to do what works for them!

This is an interesting topic. My fiance and I are quite different moneywise, but so are her parents (who have what I consider to be a model marriage). My money style has changed drastically since I first met her as I learned several lessons the hard way.
We have both agreed that we do our best to keep our paychecks separate. It is easier right now as we still live in separate homes
and I just go over to her place on weekends.

Well I work in litigation support, mainly family law. I basically characterized separate and community property. I have seen some interesting things, but let me tell you, you can still get burned on a prenup. There are a lot of loop holes and a lot doesn't hold up in court. So if you are going to get one, make sure that it is well done (i.e spend the money up front). Also putting names and especially both names on property etc, almost automatically qualifies it as community property. This is all in Texas, of course.

I figured Texas would be the hardest place to get a prenup to stick. I will mark your name down in memoery "IF" I ever need any info, TexasStarFish!! I just don't see myself ever putting myself at risk again. Not saying I would NEVER get married again, but I would definatley keep things separate. It's sad that people have to view a relationship this way, but it is better to be safe than sorry....the old saying goes.
I kind of like the sound of Diverbrian's set up at the moment. 2 houses and go over on the weekends!!

When I was married (I was certified and she was not), she complained that I didn't need all that expensive gear. Then she got certified and decided she liked my expensive gear and took ownership of my gear. Then we got divorced and she kept much of my gear. 
On the good side, I don't have to be with her and I have newer gear.
I'm really not bitter about it.
