First, calculate your BMI. BMI = weight / (height^2). If BMI is under 25, then you don't need to diet - you just need more exercise. If it's under 30, then a reduced calorie diet is recommended: men 1800 kcal per day; women 1600 kcal per day. If your BMI is 30 or more, your obese. Go see your doctor, he'll probably put you on a reduced calorie diet, recommend more exercise (as much as you can take without hurting yourself), he'll recommend eating breakfast and replacing dinner with a protein shake; and maybe a late night snack (like an orange) to keep from getting hungry. If your work at it this usually works. If not, go back and see your doctor after 3 months, and he'll give you a prescription for some diet drugs (most likely a fat blocker, or something to speed up your metabolism). And, if this doesn't work and your BMI is approaching 35, then it's time for some stomach surgery. None of this is easy. In fact, it's one of the hardest things you'll do in your life, but you will feel better for hanging in there long enough to make it work. It usually takes 6 months to 12 months to lose 10% of your current weight, i.e. this takes a lot of time and a lot of dedication and a lot of sweat and hard work. Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor.

I quit eating out at fast food places. I grab a smoothie instead of a coke. Eat small more frequent meals but not late ones. I started swimming laps, above water and under water laps, figured it would help me in scuba diving and I water ski. I also play raquetball by myself which is definately a workout, and helps relieve stress! Good luck! Find what works for you.

I am of the belief that the only way to get weight off is to run/do lots of cardio.

No carbs, some carbs, grapefruits, low fat, South Beach diet, Physicians weight loss, weight watchers...whatever diet ...it all comes and goes.

Diet and Exercise, I did cut down on the carbs and started drinking more water. I would much rather walk or walk/jog than run. No matter what, I really believe it gets down to discipline and a true desire to change your lifestyle.

As a physical therapist with some knowledge of nutrition I would encourage you to seek out a balnced meal plan that lets you eat a little of all 3 major food groups, protein, fats and "good" carbs. By good carbs steer away from white rice, yams are better that potatoes, and so forth. I was once 40lbs heavier, and what has really helped me to keep the weight off, especially thru menopause is to take up 3 mile brisk walks as many times in the week as I can fit it. I also lift moderate weights at home. I used weight watchers originally to take off the weight. Hope this helps.

Tammy,
After a few cups of coffee in the morning its Water Water plain and simple. cooking at home really helps but stay away from macaroni and cheesse and all that quick stuff, If you like meat grill it or bake it...Veggies steam them...but Water plain and clean is your best bet....

PLZ keep us posted on your progress.

Good luck on the weight loss. I have a couple of tips but you may not like them. I have recently lost 10 lbs since Christmas. It takes time, but it is more of changing your lifestyle than crash dieting. If you want to lose the weight and keep it off you have to make sacrifices. I work a lot and am currently studying for my CFA, so I have not had any time to cook recently. Here is what I recommend.

1) Drink A LOT of water, about 8 glasses a day. Stop drinking sodas and other drinks with empty calories. If I am looking to mix things up I drink a decaffinated flavored tea. Also try to stay away from the coffee. I don't drink any, but one cup a day is okay.

2) Soups are great to eat, just watch the sodium content. I also like to make my own, a big batch on the weekend so I have it for the entire week.

3) Don't eat a lot of meat. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to cook fish, salmon on the stove or swordfish and halibut in the oven. Add a few spices, some white wine does wonders for flavor. That with a side of veggies is an easy dinner.

4) Steamed veggies, takes about 2-5 min and is the easiest thing ever. And so healthy.

5) Add more fruits and veggies to your diet. Instead of grabbing some unhealthy chocolate at 3pm, I have a banana or apple. Can't wait for more fruits to be in season.

6) Exercise is extremely important. I try to do a half hour pilates early in the morning, unfortunately with my studying my schedule has been a little off. Then I try to get a run or 2 in on the weekends. Nothing long, I am definitely not a long distance runner or into running, but I find it reduces my stress.

7) I eat a yogurt a day, I don't know if that's better for women but I maintain a good daily calcium intake.

8) Choose wheat bread over white, or any other grainy bread is good for you. Try to cut back on bread all together though.

9) I have a huge sweet tooth. I've been eating peanut butter and honey sandwiches or peanut butter and apples for my desserts in the evenings. Definitely a healthier alternative.

I'll let you know if I think about anything else. But this is a good start. I highly recommend a glass of water when you wake up in the morning and a glass just before going to bed. Now you've already knocked out 2 glasses and only have to drink 6 during the rest of the day.

I hope this helps and keeps us posted on your progress!

Oh and one more thing. Induldge every once and a while. I may have a piece of chocolate, french fries, or a few cookies every once and a while. It's the only way I keep myself happy. Just remember it is a treat for yourself and as long as you don't do it all the time, it's ok.
