I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going to hide underwater this weekend. A lot of people seem to get pretty crazy around here on the Fourth. Maybe I'll finally watch the fireworks display on a night dive instead of topside!

And why is it we celebrate our birth based on the Declaration in 1776 when we didn't actually win our independence until a few years later. Seems to me it is like celebrating a baby's life from the moment of conception (we do celebrate that!) instead of birth.

Enjoy the celebration and keep the Spirit of the true America!

Actually, the resolution was passed on the 2nd. That's the day we were truly independent. John Adams wrote that July 2nd would always be a day for celebration. Let's all celebrate tomorrow.

Just as important but seemingly less relevant now is Constitution Day on September 17th.

Constitution Day would be more important if we hadn't stopped following it 140 years ago.

And more so sixty years ago, egregiously thirty-five years ago, and complete abandonment ten years ago.

July 2nd... as usual, Walter comes through with the real story. However until we actually won our independence, I have to question it. After all, a prisoner could say he or she was free... but it wouldn't count until they were released. I think England would consider their final defeat the day we won our Independence.

But why quibble... let's celebrate and get wet.

Would you suggest dating independence from Cornwallis' surrender (BTW, Cornwallis didn't actually surrender, he sent his second in command) in 1881 or from the Treaty of Ghent two years later?

The 13 colonies ceased to operate as colonies and started operating as individual countries in alliance against a common enemy as of 1776. I'd date our independence from July 2, 1776.
