Thanks - unfortunately most of the new computers being sold have vista on them :welcome: and I figure quite a few SDer's have it too. Just as long as my dive computer isn't based on any version of Windows I'll be happy :lmao:

What's your favorite Linux variant?

Sorry, but that is not correct. Most of the PC's sold today have XP on them. You can still get XP on new PC's until Jan 2008. It is not customer demand that is prolonging this. It is the computer manufacturers who do not like the incompatibilities of Vista with their PC's. You may have to search a bit and maybe whine a little, but it can be installed. I just bought a new PC for the office and it has XP Pro on it with a coupon for a Vista upgrade which mysteriously fell in the trash can... I took the attached picture a few minutes ago on the Dell site (Please do not take this as an endorsement for Dell. I do not recommend Dell to anyone in any shape or form).

Ubuntu is a solid distro. Debian based, but with a lot of nice tools. Plus, it is updated every 6 months or so, uses APT for updates (That one application is worth its weight in gold!) and has a solid support site. Plus, they will actually ship you the install DVD or CD's FREE... :lmao:

Your thought of a Windows O/S dive computer gives me the willies... ~shudder~

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one - all of the retail chains I've looked at have vista preloaded and most don't know they can still get XP...

Thanks I'll try that one and see how I like it.

Right, retail chains have what they have and there is probably little chance of you getting XP if it has Vista pre-installed. I was speaking of on-line vendors where you can build your own. You can customize the O/S as needed. I buy individual parts and build my own systems. I have enough licenses to go around so for me it is not an issue. I have been using NCIX for the last year or so. Nice service and lots of affordable product. Plus, you can build your own PC to spec if you don't want to do it yourself. They have a US and Canadian version of their web site.

I build my own as well - just built this one so I could test Vista since my next conversion at work will probably be Vista (we are installing new HP's w/ xp pro at the moment and I'm really glad to get rid of our old Dell laptops... 4 offices down 2 to go).

That's a good site - comparable to the one's I've been using so I'll add it to my list of one's to check for the next build.

Appreciate the information, Shadragon. Thanks for posting it.

I have three different computers running often at the same time. One is for basic Internet browsing, e-mail and letter writing, spreadsheets and databases. My laptop os Internet connected and mainly used for nighttime browsing and for HDV video editing. My third computer is set up for SD video editing, archiving of video segments and extracted still clips (large databases).

I started PC computing in 1983 and so far have had only one known virus attack. It was from a virus that wasn't yet in my existing virus definition database. I traced it back through several computers (this was in the days of "sneaker net" rather than Internet, and wiped it out on all the known infected computers. I've been very lucky.

However, I am not sure how much spyware, etc., may be on my system. I'll use some of your tools to see if I catch anything my tools haven't already.

Thanks again.

They are Latitude c610's and we are giving them to local schools along with the compaq desktops. The laptops have a bottleneck in the bus from a very poor design by Dell... and is why I'm really glad to get rid of them.

My case was $80 to ship. That included a smaller box with MoBo, coolers, RAM, HD, vid cards, CD burners and PS. They let you choose expedited or slow boat so you can see shipping costs before you place the order.

Also, if you buy discrete parts and want them to put it together and test it, they charge you $25. Buddy of mine sent me a pic of his system. Cables are neat and zip tied in place. Looks great. <<< THAT is a deal... I had an issue with a bent cooler fan and they replaced it no questions and no cost.
