Hmmm,
re-reading the trip thread, as that's a good way to reflect, I guess I might not have been really clear about the dive op we used. Peter of ProTech scrambled to get us some diving on this trip being last minute like it was, and on top of that, he was facing some dificulties with "Island politics", and so did a really bang up job providing any diving at all. Any issues we faced I am sure were because nobody had time to prepare for us (who does with this group ) and we were using spare tanks, boats, and whatnot.
So mucho kudos to Protech for getting it done, I am sure some of the other operators would have buckled and left us high and dry...

Aw, shucks Zach, I was only returning the favor! It was indeed a pleasure meeting, diving, and generally having a great time with you as well everybody else. A better group of divers I think would be hard to find!
BTW I was checking out the JASA site, and I am drooling a bit! I'll be planning my 2008 vacation after the holidays, and you guys will be on my list for sure!

I've been to Belize many times, starting in the mid 70s....and there are good options for land-based diving.
Ambergris Caye and even Caye Caulker are not to my tastes. They are still pretty low key, but my problem with these places is that they aren't on the reef, and require the long boat rides to dive.
I much prefer middle to southern Belize. If you want land-based diving, staying on Tobacco Caye (for the budget-minded) or Southwater Caye (more pricey), even even better, one of the Glovers Reef resorts (everything from basically camping or with very rustic acommodations at the Glovers Atoll Resort or the pricier Manta Resort) is the way to go. There, you are right on the reef and can shore-dive to your heart's content, and if you do want to boat-dive, the ride out is short. Even on Tobacco or Southwater Caye, you are only a 20 minute ride to Glovers Atoll, which is truly great diving. The places one goes to from Ambergris or Caye Caulker for comparable transport times just don't measure up to Glovers.
