The element that lifts things like balloons, spirits and voice ranges is being depleted so rapidly in the world's largest reserve, outside of Amarillo, Texas, that supplies are expected to be depleted there within the next eight years.
...guess there's not much point to getting a Trimix cert....... OC Trimix dives are not long for this world, but this trend may be the biggest single economic development towards promoting rebreathers.

Ray that is good news! And auto dealerships have changed to air blowing ballons rather than helium. The price alone makes you want to conserve it!

I believe there's no serious shortage of helium, but it's getting more costly to extract it. I also believe governments may restrict supplies for general use (such as diving) to ensure they have sufficient for military and scientific purposes.
Of course, if we can get fusion power stations running we will have lots of helium as a by-product. You may not need lamps for night dives either!
But there's no doubt that CCRs are the way to go for deep diving, for this and other reasons.

This seems to be a closed discussion between Tec Divers and Scientist.
Lets open this topic up for the general diving public that might be concerned/interested in Helium as a diving gas in the future. Are you saying that Helium is like Gold or Oil and there is only so much left in the World? and once its gone or not profitable to mine/extract that there will be no more available.....again ?

No. We are not saying that. However, Helium is a not a plentiful resource and thus will remain expensive. I think it is quite likely by the time helium becomes very scarce, we'll be able to synthesize it. Much like we do diamonds now.
