I'd rather see a shark then a lawyer. If I'm seeing lawyer it usually means something bad happened. If I'm seeing a shark I'm diving or watching TV.

Don't forget, if you come across a hostile shark you don't have to worry about swimming faster than him ... you only have to be faster than your buddy!

Sharks attack? I thought humans were the problem- they kill tons of sharks every year. Whose the aggressor here?

Seriously (moi?), having experienced many shark encounters (primarily in the tropics unless you count the leopard and horn sharks I've encountered in the last week or two here in the Dive Park), I feel comfortable saying their threat to divers is highly exaggerated.

Great whites around Catalina tend to avoid divers, or bolt from them if they approach. Occasionally they will just swim by, possibly checking you out but largely ignoring you. These are based on the legitimate encounters of dive friends here, but not personal experience. They see my fangs approaching and they're history.

I've never encountered an aggressive situation wth sharks in the tropics despite diving in many places around the world.

The two sharks that would definitely make me want to get out of the water are the tiger and the bull. I've only had one experience with a tiger and that was while kayaking in the Sea of Corteza. It was scary. I'd be concerned about bull sharks because I don't know them and have heard stories. Maybe Walter and others who have experience with them can set me (and you) straight.

I had a terribly irrational fear of great whites when I moved here 35 years ago. I don't give them much thought any more even though they are regularly seen swimming within a mile of the Dive Park. Would love to video one.

Doc

Bill, I don't know if I would consider fear of a great white "irrational" ... I think if I saw one while I was diving over there I might worry a bit myself.

Like you, I'd also be worried about tigers and bulls, but since we don't get the latter in our area of the world it doesn't keep me up at night.

What about it, Walter? What's your input on these two?

Ah Jextract but we do. Two juvenile tiger sharks were seen near White's Landing last summer by biologists who are familiar with the species. They are believed to have been observed as far north as Alaska. Of course this is very rare and southern California seems to be the furthest north they are encountered with any frequency. Milton Love includes them in his book on Pacific Coast fishes.

By the way- I heard the vis at the Park was great today (50+ ft). It figures- a day I reserved for topside editing. When are the two of you coming back out- this weekend or next?

Doc

PS- cmt489: if you ever dive with Jextract just remember what a dive knife is really for- to slow down your buddy so you can make the escape!
