Hi All,

I have a large style SMB maybe 30lbs lift, oral & reg infaltion w/ dump valve. Attached to finger spool with 75' Mason Line( diamond braid nylon sheath & polyster core), very strong and light weight.

Use only as SMB on drift dives, deployment at usually 60-45 '. Line slow to reel back on finger spool which slows my ascent. My initial KNOT that I used to attach line to SMB web was a Bowline Knot. Not the best knot to use as the wave action cause the line to unload and allowed the knot to slip. Luckly I didn't lose the SMB on last deployment. I am now using a Anchor Bend a/k/a Fishermans Bend as the attachment knot of line to SMB.

What kind of knot would you use??

Thanks in Advance,
Stan

Tie a large enough bowline in the sppol line, helps to have a wood marble with a small hole drilled in there also, and pass the spool through the loop of the bowline so that it attaches to the SMB without having to physically tie to it. Hopefully I explained it enough so that you understand what I mean.

That's how they taught us to set up our reels in wreck training too. I also added a small 3" bungee coord between the end of the loop and the ball, so that when I wind the reel up it is under slight tension against the lock. That seems to help keep the reel from getting tangled when it's not in use, due to line stretching, slippage, etc. It also makes a nice tail to pull when trying to free up the loop when it's tied on to something.

I have mine tied in a bowline so I can clip/unclip my SMB to it. Works well and does not tighten under tension.

Hi ND, I think the wave action of SMB caused the line to load and unload, thereby allowing the knot to slip also nylon is pretty slick to start.
The web site link below is neat. About 3 pararghs down is a comment on unloading line.
Thanks
