I just returned from Jamestown, R.I. I went to visit an old friend who happens to own Ocean State Scuba. I was unable to do any boats dives as their boat was in the shop for some unexpected repairs, however I did a shore dive from a very popular site on their island called "Fort Wetherill". It was an enjoyable dive in spite of the poor vis. I highly recommend this area for those of you in the Northeast. Jamestown is across the bay from Newport. It is a beautiful area and my buddy David even has accomadations on site at his shop. Check out his website at www.oceanstatescuba.com. If you go, say Hi to my friend David.

Describe "poor vis". It's a relative term depending on what you're used to, e.g. when I was in Florida, 40ft was considered "murky", but up in my home waters of the PNW, 40ft would have us peeing our drysuits (average is 15-20).I just returned from Jamestown, R.I. The vis was about 10 feet. I must admit that I am spoiled, since I try to do most of my diving in the "sunny south". I am told that the vis is normally much better... 20 to 30 feet.
