I've not met you yet. So hard to be alone after a lively housemate. I got an empty nest several years ago through a divorce - Lost my husband, his grown son and their best friend in one fell swoop when I closed "Miss Margaret's Home for Wayward Musicians"
Lots of great suggestions above including exercise, pampering and good girlfriends and truly taking care of yourself. Travel is also a great idea. If you can't go on a big SD trip, try joining us on the Keys Krawl preceding the Tortugas trip in July. PM me or Diverbabs for the skinny!
Good thoughts going your way

I would love to do the Keys Krawl with everyone, but I'm as far away from that as I can get and still be in Florida. It's about a 12 hour drive from Pensacola to Key Largo! Thanks for all the support - it helps!!!Hi Deb,

Anyway, you guys are the greatest - thanks for the support. I am taking your advice and keeping busy. Tonight after work I went to Bands on the Beach with friends. At least I live in a really cool place. For something to do on a Tuesday night after work, you can't really beat hanging out at the beach with sugar white sand, beautiful blue water, a nice breeze, a bottle wine, great friends, listening to a great band. Oops, I think my sympathy factor just plunged with some of you. BUT . . . I still have to come home to an empty house, which is the hard part.
SO, what are you guys waiting for???? Come on down/up/over!

A bad case of Empty Nest Syndrome, Any advice????
Its a double-edged sword I guess,
I was talking to a couple the other day that where about my age and they went on about the kids leaving the nest, and I said if I would have had a chance to do things over I would have had children later in life because I feel that I would make a better father with more patience and understanding at the age I am now. It seems I was just a kid at the time that I was raising kids. So on the other side I guess it was better I did it then instead of going thru the terrible teens with them when is was turning 60
O Ya... Advise....Turn your home into a home for scuba divers

I keep putting that invitation out there!! LOL. Actually that's kind what seems to be happening this summer - lots of visitors, and that's a good thing!

So Deb, how much advance notice do you need?
what if the hokey pokey really IS what it's all about?

To future empty nest-ers: I decided early that I would go into my empty nest with a positive outlook -- I turned 40 the year my only child moved out, and decided that my life was finally going to be my own. That's when I started getting involved in things that I was interested in, and hey - I could finally afford to do them! I still felt the empty space from time to time, but as long as I can call or e-mail my daughter once in a while, my heart feels good about the situation. And, we've become good friends now that I'm not "the boss of her" anymore!
Yeah, your relationship with your kids changes dramatically when they grow up . . . er, uh, get older (sometimes it takes a while to grow up). I, for one, never intend to grow up . Life changes, and there are great things to be had when your kids are no longer your primary responsibility. When I turned 50, I finally wrote a book and learned to dive. Now I'm an artist (remember, it's in the eye of the beholder!), and I can afford to spend some time and money on me. Then, if you're really blessed, they'll marry and have grandchildren - and it sort of starts all over - except you get the fun part without the responbility. Our daughters have given us 3 granddaughters, and we finally have a boy on the way in October.
Yeah, it changes -- but change is good

Put me down on the list of reservations for your daughter's bedroom! Or I can sleep on the futon again. Maybe one weekend in June??? If you get really restless, you can come visit Birmingham. We have a Marble Slab here too!!! Even better, we have this great martini bar that has some really good drinks!!!
I'm with you, are there 2 beds? Would love a trip to northern florida and you can feel free to come take over my son's room. The youngest one moved to New York 2 years ago. I enjoy trips to go see him and we spend a lot of time catching up when he's here. With cell phones and internet it hardly feels like he's away. Sometime his friends stop by just to say hello. Very cool!

Soooo, as a recent visitor and dive companion with dear DD I am pleased to report all is well, the blues have long flown the coop and a great time was had by all. (No, it was a day trip, and although never mentioned I doubt there still is a spare bedroom option, you bums.) It was all about on sites less traveled with a small, mature (NOT geriatric) cadre of divers aboard the spacious MV Tech Rec. Deb for your help arranging my trip, solid dive skills and reliable buddy practices below and your warm, welcoming personality throughout.
If anyone is planning to dive along the Emerald Coast (colloquially referred to as the Redneck Riviera) I highly recommend touching base with Debbie. She not only knows the business and area but also is well connected with other DO's to fit any dive preference, site or activity.
Finally broken to plow and harnessed to the traces. How may I help you today? Questions welcomed to charlies@singledivers.com
