SPECIAL TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:

1. Contests & Special Activities:

Well its a week or so before Thanksgiving so we are going to host an EARLY BIRD TURKEY SHOOT! Yep...that's right there will be a Photography Contest for EVERYONE! We'll have categories for both land and water shots...new and seasoned divers. So whether its your first time taking a picture or the millionth time...there will be a category for you to participate in! Stay Tuned for More Details!

2. School Supplies: As is our tradition, we take school supplies on our trips to the under-privileged children of the countries we visit while diving. Curacao is no exception and we will have several orphanages to help out. One of the non-diving afternoons, we will take whoever would like to join us and drop off the school supplies to the kids. This can be fairly emotional as I have seen grown men tear up at the look on their faces when the children see us. So PLEASE keep your eye out for school supplies on sale as these items are extremely expensive in the countries we visit. Remember a child can play with a can or a box and use great imagination pretending it is a castle, fort, car or space capsule. But they can not make do as well when they need school supplies so that they can learn and better themselves.

3. Sightseeing & Tours: for Single and Married but Buddyless Divers! Come join in to LOTS of fun in the sun...have fun meeting other single and buddyless divers or pamper yourself a little! There is something for everyone including. Check the second post of this thread for full details!

Important Trip Updates:

Please see post #3 of this thread here for ONGOING updates of the trip. We make every effort to summarize the important trip info you need either in this first post or in a dedicated post for the purpose but we can not gaurantee that all the info you need has been summarized so you will need to read the thread to be completely updated. :cool1:

Additional Trip Information:

Dive Offerings:
Two tank boat dives leave at 9.00 am and one-tank boat dive leaves at 2.00 pm
Guided and non-guided shore diving available
Boat night dive typically scheduled for Thursday nights
Watamula 1 tank dive on Tuesday at 2:00 pm
Access to personal dive gear, tanks and weights 24 hours a day
PADI instructors are available to teach courses from DSD to Divemaster
Nitrox EANx is available up to 40% as well as rebreather 100% source fills

Gear Storage:
All dive guests are welcome to leave their gear at the dive shop. We have a locked open-air room perfect for drying gear between dives. Sunset Divers will provide each guest with a key to the room so they can access their gear 24-hours/day. In addition, we keep plenty of full tanks in the gear room for anyone interested in shore diving outside the shop's normal hours.

Dive Sites:
Curacao offers some of the most spectacular diving in the Caribbean. Most of the dive sites are gently-sloping walls that start at 15-20 feet and extend beyond recreational limits. Sunset Divers routinely dives over 20 dive sites on the west end of Curacao, including Mushroom Forest, one of Curacao's premier sites. We regularly encounter: spotted drums, moray eels, snake eels, flounder, hawksbill turtles, lettuce leave slugs, angelfish, flatworms, seahorses, frogfish and much more!

Shore Diving:
Many dive sites in Curacao are accessible by shore, although most divers prefer the convenience of diving from a boat. Dive Site #17, the Airplane, is located steps away from our dive shop.

Diving Conditions:
Water temperature ranges from 78°F - 84°F, and divers are generally comfortable in a 3.00mm wetsuit or less.

Dive Boats:
Sunset Divers has two dive boats. The weather, the number of divers, and the logistics of the specific week all determine which boat we will use. Day Dreamer is a 44-foot boat with twin inboard diesels and a huge open deck space. Entry procedure is a giant stride off the stern platform. The boat has 2 ladders which sit low in the water to allow for easy access onboard. Day Dreamer has plenty of shade, dry storage, two camera rinse bins, and a freshwater shower on board. The boat is rated for 24 divers, however we limit to 21. Day Tripper is a 31-foot boat with twin Yamaha 100 hp outboards. It is a small and fast dive boat, perfect for smaller groups. Entry procedure is a back-roll off the side. The boat has two ladders - one on each side. In addition, Day Tripper has plenty of shade and limited dry storage. The boat is rated for 16 divers, however we limit to 10.

Rental Equipment:
Sunset Divers has a full range of rental equipment. We have weighted integrated BDC's, Aqualung and Cressi regulators, Suunto wrist-mount computers, and all of our equipment is less than 6-months old.

Customer Service:
Sunset Divers places a large emphasis on customer service. Each morning, the staff will set up the boat with regulators and BCD's. During the surface interval, the dive staff will switch all gear to a full tank. In addition, we will rinse and hang the gear once the boat returns to the dock. All that is left to do is relax and enjoy your vacation!

How far is the resort from the airport?
The resort is 17 Km from the airport. This is about a 20 minute drive. You can stop at a local snack shop on the way for a cold drink, otherwise known as a roadie!

How far is the resort from town?
The resort is 25 Km from Willemstad, the city center. Visit Punda and Otrobanda for some sightseeing, or pick up those last minute souvenirs. Visit the floating market, check out the local museum, walk across the floating bridge, or have a cocktail on the waterfront. Plenty to see and do. And remember you can have fun bargaining for gifts and souvenirs with the locals.

How can we get to town?
There is a complimentary shuttle that runs from Monday through Saturday.
Please see our Tour Schedule for Shuttle Times.

Do I need to bring my own beach towels with me?
No, all beach towels are issued from the front desk daily, and should be dropped off there when you have finished with them. That way you can be sure to have a sand free room.

What kind of activities are there at the resort?
From beach volleyball, hiking, Salsa dancing classes, karaoke, miniature golf, kayaking and lots more! Feel free to join in on the fun, or relax on the beach with a Pina Colada and watch the world go by.

What are the restaurant hours?
Breakfast is served from 8:00am until 10:00am, however, if you are an early riser or diver, please inform either the General Manager of your needs and they will be happy to accommodate you.
Lunch is served from 12 noon until 2:30pm. Go on - indulge, everyone packs on a few pounds during their vacation!
Dinner is served from 6:30pm until 9:30pm. If you would like to have a late dinner or perhaps you want to do a night dive, please inform Ruth or Eppy, the dinning room supervisors, or a member of the management team, and we will make sure you have a quiet table reserved for a late supper.

What kind of food is served?
We have many positive comments about the food at the resort. It is good, healthy fare, with an American style and a Caribbean flair with lots of variety. There is a breakfast buffet every day, featuring cereals, yogurts and fruit. Request your eggs cooked any style: order pancakes for kids and expect regular breakfast fare.
Lunch features a different menu every day. You can always order a hamburger or a hotdog. There is a cook out grill buffet on Saturday and local style buffet on Sunday featuring Kabrito? stewed goat? go on, be brave, give it a try!!
Dinner is generally ordering a la carte from the menu, except for a delightful Seafood buffet on Monday nights and our famous Beach BBQ on Thursdays. Select items such as Filet Mignon and Lobster are available for a small surcharge.
The executive chef Angel Martis will always accommodate special requests such as vegetarians, food allergies, etc? and families with children are also easily catered too. Kids can enjoy Mac & Cheese, chicken nuggets and other kiddie favorites. Sample menus are available upon request.

What time does the bar serve until?
Indulge in a refreshing Tequila sunrise or Sea Breeze at the swim up pool bar, open daily from 11:00am until 7:00pm. Feel free to swim there at any time; however, there is no lifeguard on duty. Tired of Swimming? Head for the main bar in the restaurant and enjoy a cold Amstel beer, or sample a Blue Lagoon with the famous Blue Curacao liquor, you can get a Bloody Mary at 9:00am, and the bar is open until 12 midnight? or when the guest decides to leave, as your wish is our command!

What are the Check in and Check out times?
Check in is at 3:00pm, and check out is at 12 noon. However, whatever time you arrive we will be ready for you. If your flight is later, a late check out can be arranged at the additional cost of $25 per person.
In the event that your room needs to be vacated by noon, we will be happy to store your luggage for you and provide you access to a day room, so you can enjoy the pool and beach until the last minute and take a quick shower before heading home.

Will I be able to use the Internet?
Yes, there is an Internet Café available at the Front Desk.
Chat with your friends on MSN and tell them what a great time you are having, send a postcard or keep up with current affairs. For those who do need to check work emails or use their lap tops on a regular basis you will need to get access to a local dial up number from your service provider, without it, you won't be able to log on. There are no Internet facilities available in your room. Internet cards can be purchased for $5.00 for 15 minutes and $10 for 30 minutes. Happy surfing!

Is the Casino open at the resort?
Regretfully, the casino is not open at this time. However, we will be happy to take you into town to play at one of the big casinos.

Is topless or nude sunbathing permitted?
As this is a Dutch island with a European influence, topless bathing is permitted and is not frowned upon at all. For those looking to get more in touch with nature and those who prefer no tan lines, why not try the small-secluded nude beach. This is the only legal nudist beach in Curacao. Remember that sun lotion, Curacao is only 12 degrees north of the equator, factor SPF 30 recommended?ouch! If being au natural is your thing, why not contact us to discover when our next nude week only takes place, all shapes and sizes welcome. Ask your trip provided and they can tell you when.

Do you provide a babysitting service?
We can hire a baby sitter for you given a little notice at the rate of $10.00 per hour.

Is there a gift shop on the property?
Yes, there is a small shop located next to the front desk; you can buy cigarettes, cigars, t-shirts, ice creams, and some souvenirs. The shop is open from 9am-5pm daily.

Can we rent a car on the island?
There is a Thrifty's, a Hertz, Budget and Avis rental on the island. The nearest and most convenient option is directly at the airport. Be prepared to spend a while filling in forms, and double check that there is gas in the car!!! Such is life in Paradise!!! Rates start at $40 per day.

Will I be able to call home and make long distance phone calls from my room?
Yes, once you check in your telephone will be activated. You can easily call the United States to let loved ones know you have arrived safe and sound, by dialing zero to get an outside line, then the USA Country code 001, followed by the area code and then the number. For the United Kingdom, dial 0044. Our telephone prices are very reasonable and will automatically be billed to your room at the rate of around $1.20 per minute.

What languages do the staff speak?
All of our staff are accomplished linguists, speaking many languages. The native tongue is Papiamento, a blend of Dutch, Spanish, French and Portuguese. They also speak fluent Dutch, Spanish and the majority speak English.
Pick up a few Papiamento phrases to impress your friends and colleagues back home.
Lesson 1: Masha Danki, means thank you very much.
Lesson 2: Dushi means lovely, this word is used frequently with different meanings. Call your loved one dushi as a term of endearment, or compliment the chef on his culinary talents by declaring dushi! Literally translated it means lovely!
Lesson 3: Be sure to say good-bye to the staff before you leave, they will be impressed when you say Ayo which means good-bye.

Is there a masseuse on property?
We do have a masseuse on call. Asyla will be happy to offer you a Swedish massage or hot rock massage either in your room or on the beach or at the pool. Relax and listen to the waves splash against the coral reef while Asyla works her magic to soothe your muscles. Schedule an appointment with Asyla at the front desk.

Are there safe deposit boxes available?
Yes, we do have safe deposit boxes available. You can lock up your passport and tickets and have your own key and total access to your safe whenever you need it. They are only small, so you won't be able to fit the crown jewels in there. This is a casual resort, no need for diamonds and pearls here!

Do the rooms have refrigerators?
Standard Garden View Rooms and Superior Ocean View Rooms do not have refrigerators. If you need to store medicine or have special requirements, there is a fridge behind the front desk that you can have access to whenever needed. If a fridge is a necessity, please be sure to ask for one while you are making your reservation, they are available in Premium Loft Suites only.

Do the rooms have hairdryers in them?
Most rooms have hairdryers built in the bathroom. However, there are some that do not. Hairdryers are available upon request at the front desk.

Are there roll away beds available?
We do have baby cribs that we can put in your room on request. However, there are no roll away beds available. The key is to make sure that we get you in the room type that best suits your needs. Superior Rooms have two Queen Beds, whereas Junior Suites and Loft Suites are furnished with King Beds and a futon sofa bed.

Are there irons and ironing boards available?
Yes, you can request an iron and iron board at the front desk. However, do not fret over a few wrinkles in your shorts; this is a very casual resort, shorts and Teva's welcome.

Is there a dress code at the resort?
There is certainly no formal dress code at the resort. However, we do request that people cover up while in the restaurant, sarongs will suffice for the ladies and t-shirts for the gentlemen. After all, we do want all guests to enjoy a Bon Appetite!

Should we tip the staff?
You are certainly not obligated to tip anyone during your stay. As this is an inclusive resort, there is no need for you to carry money with you while you are on property. However, you will probably make friends with lots of the staff and may want to give some a parting gift. Alternately, you are welcome to give a staff donation to a member of the management team who will put it in the staff kitty and make sure that all staff get the benefit of your generous offer. From the wait staff in the restaurant, the dish washers and gardeners. The team will work very hard and enjoy what they do, and are always pleasantly surprised to receive gratuities from our guests.

Will my electrical equipment work at the resort?
In the USA the typical voltage is 110V that runs on 60 cycles. In Curacao, the voltage is also 110V but runs on 50 cycles. This means that your appliances will still run, but curling irons or other sensitive electrical equipment may run a little hotter. There are transformers available at the front desk to ensure that your appliances run on the appropriate cycle. We do have a few adaptors available, but recommend bringing your own if possible. Especially our European and United Kingdom customers, adaptors will be required to convert three pronged plugs into two prongs.

Driving Directions From Airport
Exit the airport and turn right. Up a hill about 2 miles to a round about (They have them in Europe and New England) Take the first right in the round about (at this round about the guests entering, that's you, have to yield to the cars that are already on the round about) this turn will take you west. You stay on this two lane road, you can go between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour, for about 15 minutes until the road forks, you take the left fork. The fork in the road sneaks up on you at night. It is about two miles past the little village of Terra Cora. Terra Cora has a market, gas station, a few shops and is really the only little village you will go through on this main east west road. Immediately after the fork there is a church on the left, if you pass the church on your left you missed the fork, the church should be on your right as you turn on to the Soto Road, there are no signs!! You carry on down the Soto road for about 10 minutes, you should go between 50 and 70 kilometers on this road, this road is a little winding and there are parts that try to get you to turn off but stay on this main road. Just before the very small village of Soto the Sunset Waters sign is posted. It is a left turn. Just before this sign is a soccer field on the left, then a school on the left about 300 yards after the soccer field and a big yellow church and church school and cemetery on the right. Once you turn at the sign you continue on this very winding road, go slow, for about 2 miles to the ocean and to Sunset Waters!! We will see you there.

Are ground transfers included with my reservation?
YES they are included in our package. Once in Curacao if you exit the terminal our transfer driver Mr. Mook.....aka " Papa" will be waiting to the right near the vending machines, holding a Sunset Waters sign. If you are delayed or concerned prior to exit, pick up the courtesy phone near the baggage claim to speak to the hotel . In the unlikely event that Papa is not waiting upon exit call the hotel at 864 1233.

That is a good price. The only challenge for me flying through Miami is that it gets me into Curacao at 8:10pm on the 8th and having to leave at 9:10am on the 15th.

Do we have the same issues with orientation on the first day of diving in Curacao like we did Bonaire?

I will find out about orientation today. Gosh I hope not! Maybe one of our Sunset Water vets can tell us while I'm waiting on the answer.

And I arrive at 8:10pm on the 8th. So we will be on the same flight if you are on AA

My LDS had a group of 18 at Sunset Waters April '08. Orientation started 8am 1st morning after check in. Sign waivers hand over CC# and leave your Cert Card with shop as a deposit & security. Walk a round shop, find out how to sign on for extras, where to place empty tanks, hangers and buckets for gear, and code for shack lock. No big deal . On boat and diving by 9-9:30. Next day boats depart 8am.

Perfect!!! That is how we like it! So I'm guessing that they will do the orientation whenever people arrive so we should be good!

I'm a 5 time vet of Sunset Waters/Sunset Divers...I always arrive on the 8:10pm aa flight and leave the resort at 6:30am or so to get to the airport for the 9:15am flight the next sat. My buds are at the bar, waiting with my drink in hand :birthday: You don't get there til about 10pm as drive is about 45 minutes each way to town. So you early birds will have a chance to check in with the dive shop earlier, and we late comers schlep our gear down the next morning and check in, no problem.

Did ya'll see all the info. i wrote about this place, and the people, before? Sure hope I don't have to rewrite it!

here's my post from 2/08; i plan to be there in november 08!

Well, let's see. January 08 was my 5th time there, and I was certified there in Feb. 04. I found they take care of you, the boats are layed out well, the larger one holds 20 (tight fit) and is a giant stride in with 2 ladders to come up. The smaller boat holds 10 and you hoist your fanny on the side and do a backwards roll into the drink. they take care of getting your bc onboard and on tanks each day...you have the rest of your gear in your assigned basket and tote to and from gear room to boat...they have ample rinse tanks for your stuff and hanging space for wetsuits. both boats are covered by not enclosed (i am pale and always claim shade), some spray can come over the bow, but you are on the ocean about to go diving so...? there is no head on either boat but a cabin area to keep your clothes/towels dry if you don't use a dry bag. the dive sites are never more than a 15 minute ride so you hardly have time to get your wetsuit on and you are there. you often spend your interval back at the dive shop as it is close by (bathroom break)!

I'm a traveller and do like my 4-5 star resorts for other things (I'll be in Tahiti on the Gauguin in July for instance), but when diving I adjust to 2-3 star (thank god for a/c). Sunset Waters is what I'd call shabby chic, a bit of paint peeling, etc. The sunset views from the oceanview rooms are absolutely spectacular. The rooms are plain, clean and spacious, a/c, etc. It has a pool with a swim up bar that is tended most of the day, great for those who bypass the shore diving in the afternoon! The outdoor dining room (all inclusive) is covered by a huge thatched roof, has gorgeous water views, and has good food.

The dive shop...Lynn's been running the show for the last few years and knows her stuff. DM's are a transient breed by necessity so there is turnover there. But Lynn either goes herself, or makes sure there are good, safe DM's taking care of you....and she even sometimes supplies the whipped cream at the thurs. nite BBQ dinner (don't ask :birthday: They get to know your dive style and are careful with depths, air consumption, time underwater, etc. That said, most dives are close to an hour and max 90 feet on only a couple. the norm is more like 30-60ft.

WHAT I LIKE MOST...the people...they have the SAME staff still there...that says a lot to me...The owner Frank knows me, the manager Jim knows me, Ruth behind the front desk knows me, old Pappa who picks me up from airport knows me, Kenny! my guy behind the bar knows me! and Tookie, the chef remembers to make iguana soup for me everytime I come without asking....They remember you!! that's the best part.

What more can I say....

Thanks Shawn...as a woman of discerning tastes its nice to know the place passes muster! :birthday:

oh yeah, that part it true...discerning is a nice word for it!! :birthday:

a few more thoughts...they don't have safes in the rooms, but have a few behind the front desk...it's nice to share with buddys if they fill up...only time you'd need wallet, passport is if you're going to town or excursion, etc. :birthday:

Days went like this...Casual breakfast watching the bananquits steal sugar off the tables, toddle down to dive shop for 2 great dives (I say down because you literally walk down the cliff to get to the dive shop, and of course back up when you are done)... back for late lunch...afterwards, could choose to veg on beach catching glimpses of the clothing optional section (walled off) :birthday: , can have drinks here served by a tray on a pulley from the restaurant above!... veg by the pool...have cocktails at the swim up bar if you are done diving for the day, or plan your afternoon shore dive around 3 or so with your buddies, then back in time to clean up for gorgeous sunset and dinner. There was always a board by the office with lots of activities/excursions to sign up for as well, but you might have to give up some dive time for that! :birthday:

There is a computer in the office where you buy a card/time to use.

We usually went to town on Friday afternoon, as some of us couldn't dive anyway...you can stroll the dutch streets, shop a bit (mmmm cigars, dutch cheeses, dutch linens, fine jewelry, souvenirs), walk across the very cool antique pontoon bridge, sip cocktails under colorful umbrellas by the water's edge watching the boats go by... :birthday:

We've had dinner in town before too. We've attended a local disco as well (fun!). There's also a casino or two in town... :birthday:

Thurs. nite is BBQ by the beach with live music from local band, and DJ spinning after that. I think that's the night dive night too, so hurry back for dinner! You can do shore night dives as well anytime I think.

More stuff as I think of it...

I'm in Curacao. Do local divers get to join for dives?
