hey all y'all in Houston, I'm following Ike and hoping for the best. After the storm is over, please let us all on the board know that you're ok.

Yes. My thoughts are with all of you in the path of Ike, which according to the Weather Channel earlier this evening will even affect Chicago.

Seriously, Been there, done that. Not fun. Grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, Mobile, Alabama, and south Houston. I could write a book on how to survive with no power. Still associate the sound of chain saws with the aftermath of a hurricane.
Worked endless hours volunteering after hurricane Rita.
I think I'm safe now in Tucson!
Good luck to you guys in Houston! If you need a place to go call me and we'll head down to Mexico! ~ D

Go figure...when I was a kid no power meant the power lines had too much snow on them! We melted snow for water, bundled up and waited it out. I never connected chainsaws with that type of aftermath, they were just what my dad used to cut down trees that were in the wrong place or had died, I've associated them with stacking firewood for the fireplace.

I remember hearing a chain saw for three weeks nonstop except at night after Hurricane Fredrick hit Mobile Alabama one year when I was a kid. Every tree was down for miles. I remember thinking it was so cool because I could climb on top of my house by walking up a fallen tree. I'm sure we supplied the North with lots of firewood that year! ~ D
