Hey gang...a couple of things...one its that time of year for one of my favorite charities to do their annual raffle. This organization buys school supplies, clothes, and small toys for needy children in Honduras and Costa Rica. It started out as Hurricane relief and has grown exponetially from there.

The organization is www.ToysForTheChildren.org and we had hoped to help with the toy distribution this year but it will end up being next year! We can however help with the fundraising and I'll open a new thread to post how you can help and what you might receive as an added bonus from the generous contributions of dive resorts, dive manufacturers and dive shops!

I really appreciate all the feedback and our goal for 2005 is to have several diving and children related charites for SD's ongoing support!

To give is to receive!!! -ww :teeth:

Aloha y'all!

I didn't want to hijack this thread, but it got me to thinking, what is it that people really want in a charity before they decide to give. I'm actually helping a non-profit move to its next phase of growth and would like to know. I've created a separate thread for your input though...

Diving For Dollars

we clean up the coast,,,they donate the money...of course we would have to donate it a foundation dealing with respiratory disease (Lung Cancer, emphysema, or better..childhood asthma).
who's leading this parade anyway?

I ran into the "Toys for the Children" folks at Trashfest last weekend. They have some GREAT prizes this year, including a trip on the MV Manthiri in the Maldives. I have been on 5 trips with Manthiri and it is a FIRST CLASS Liveaboard, as well as the best destination I have ever been to - everything from Whale Sharks to Mantas to Nudibranch's and incredible numbers of fish!

I bought a couple of their raffle tickets, and I think we all should support their cause (providing toys and needed items for children from underdeveloped countries!)

I see we already have a post on them. I add my vote!

Toys for the Children

This site does not seem to have been updated since 2005... I know we were encouraged to bring school supplies to Grenada so I am wondering... Do we have an "official" charity that SD supports, or is this still up in the air?
Remember, email is an inefficient communications forum. You may not read things the way it was intended. Give people the benefit of the doubt before firing back... Especially if it is ME...! ;)

We officially support HSA, Toys for the Children via raffle ticket sales, and organizations that save sharks, dolphins and the oceans.

I will always look at other suggestions but would love to see more action for these fine charities. As for the school supplies...that is a SingleDivers.com iniative that we've done since 2004 on most of our trips.

While this is not a diving related charity, I do avail myself of the location to take a diving vacation AFTER I am finished with my work. Some of you already know of my humanitarian work.

Operation Restore Hope - USA is a non profit humanitarian charity (501©3 registered) that is dedicated to providing free surgical reconstructive surgeries to indigent children in the Philippines who are born with facial birth defects, like cleft lip and cleft palate. I have been participating annually and February 2008 will mark my 10th annual mission trip to provide those surgeries. The participants pay for their own expenses so all funds raised can contribute to expenses and supplies needed for those operations.

Last February 2007, we (a team of 14 doctors and nurses) were able to provide 68 children and young adults with free surgery for cleft lip and palate defects in just 4 1/2 days of surgery. Yes, we work hard!

The foundation was created earlier this year at the bequest of my step-father who died of a heart attack to support this need.

(Small plug - We do accept donations and they are fully tax-deductible!) And yes, I am Medical Director, but we use all $$ raised to buy medicines and supplies that we give to the patients for free, no strings attached.

Robin

Hey gang...I am looking for Diving Related charitable causes that SD can support going forward in the future!

I have a particular affinity for organizations that help handicapped people such as HSA...Handicapped Scuba Association as well as organizations that help children such as "Toys for the Children" that collects clothes, toys, school supplies for needy children in 3rd world countries such as Honduras, Costa Rica etc.

What organizations that are diving or scuba related are you aware of that we could consider making an official SD Charity??? Thanks, kamala aka Wreck Wench

What about SUDS?
