Hey gang...I am looking for Diving Related charitable causes that SD can support going forward in the future!

I have a particular affinity for organizations that help handicapped people such as HSA...Handicapped Scuba Association as well as organizations that help children such as "Toys for the Children" that collects clothes, toys, school supplies for needy children in 3rd world countries such as Honduras, Costa Rica etc.

What organizations that are diving or scuba related are you aware of that we could consider making an official SD Charity??? Thanks, kamala aka Wreck Wench

i mean, 'toys for tots' is sponsored by bikers....but i rarely see a 2yr old on a harley...

No it doesn't have to be diving related...just seems to be a natural correlation. I bet there is a Diving Related Children's Cancer program out there somewhere? And Make a Wish is excellent!!!

I'm partial to Susan G Komen, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, MS, diabetes...the interesting thing is the bicycling community has charity rides here in Texas just about every weekend, but I've never heard of scuba doing something like that

I'm partial to the Kenny Daly foundation myself. I tend to want to look to providing support to individuals on a case by case basis when I hear of an outstanding need, rather than through a charitable organization....

WOW!! So far these are all great! Perhaps we need a diving and non-diving organization for SD to support! Also...if you have links to the programs that you wish for us to consider...that would be awesome...Make a Wish I know...the balance will require looking up and/or researching so your help is greatly appreciated.

Any diving related organizations? -ww

Actually, I berlieve we should do both. From time to time, we'll become aware of a situation like Kenny's. I believe we should concentrate on helping as long as we are needed. In between, we should try to assist in other areas. There are lots of good causes.

I've never heard of scuba doing something like that

Kim,

I believe Laura participates in something quite similar, but SCUBA related, to raise money to fight diabetes every year. We can certainly organize our own events. Perhaps a SCUBA relay event?

Walter,

I agree with you; I hadn't heard of scuba fund raisers, but it could probably be done.

The ones I listed are near and dear to my heart, but I know there are other organizations or personal charities that could benefit as well

It is also possible to make Kenny one of our 'personal' charitable causes since we have a connection for him already. Just an idea.

As for the Charity of TSSplashe's choice...I'll see what he has in mind. Thanks gang...you all are awesome!!!! -ww

Walter,

I participate in the "Scuba for Diabetes", which is a spin-off event held in conjuction with the "Swim for Diabetes". they also have a "Snorkle for Diabetes"

I'm not sure if this is a nationwide event, but there are several cities in Ohio that participate. I've been involved with the ones in Cleveland and Toledo.

Another one is Scubafest. The Ohio Council for Skin and Scuba Divers, Inc. has a yearly banquet ball/weekend scuba expo called "Scubafest" which benefits several charities. (in fact, that is where I got a free sample of Dive Chronicles and saw the Singledivers.com ad). Some proceeds from the event go to their marine education scholarship fund, and we also choose 1-2 other charities to sponsor. For the past two years we have supported a free dental clinic in Roatan. (The Scuba with Santa I did was also for the same dental clinic.) The Ohio Council website is www.ocssdi.org if you want more info. or PM me if you like
