WHAT YOU'LL SEE:
Some of the best diving in the USVI can be found in St. Croix. The North Shore is home to "The Wall" which runs parallel along the island for about 7 miles. The North Shore has a very diverse underwater environment including classic spur and groove reefs, beautiful coral gardens, and spectacular walls that plummet to depths of 3,200 feet.
Join the Nekton vessel as it departs from Fajardo, PR and travel to Vieques or "Isla Nena", Puerto Rico's little sister island. Vieques is a sleepy island just 7 miles east of the mainland of Puerto Rico. Christopher Columbus first sighted Vieques in 1493 and since then it has remained a jewel of these tropical waters. Over the years it has been the heated center stage between the US Navy and island residents. In 2003 the US Navy relinquished all the lands to the Fish and Wildlife Administration. Because the US Navy controlled most of the island until recently, most of the land is unexplored as well as the waters. The majority of reefs and dive sites have never been seen by others and the island has some of the last remaining "virgin reefs"in the Caribbean. While diving Vieques you will experience a forest of massive sea fans, giant sea whip plumes, and a plethora of dense soft corals.
SCHEDULED ITINERARY
While each Puerto Rico and St. Croix cruise may vary due to weather and conditions, the outline below will give you a good feel for the exciting week in store for you!
Days Prior to start of our trip: If you wish to arrive early in San Juan PR or want to combine other diving adventures in conjunction with this one let us know. NOTE: While we can pass Nekton's Frequent Diver Discounts onto you if you book travel privately with us this special price is so good that it exceeds the Frequent Diver Discount so will not apply to this trip. If you wish to do a back to back let us know and we'll check for a possible discount for you.
Feb 14 Saturday: You will fly into San Juan Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico (airport code SJU). From San Juan, you'll need to make your way to Puerto Del Rey Marina near Fajardo, about 35 miles from San Juan. One may rent a car, arrange for a private transfer, or ride in a shared van with other Nekton guests. (Please note that the shared shuttle may require a wait as other Nekton guests arrive and you MUST arrive by 5pm in order for you to make the group van. Please send your flight details IMMEDIATELY so the boat can arrange more than one van if needed. ALSO NOTE that even if you take a private taxi you must arrive in SJU and be at the boat no later than 7:30 pm and a private taxi will run about $75 one way.) Once at the marina, you may enjoy dinner ashore on your own at the marina's pizzeria, delicatessen or international cuisine restaurant specializing in lobster. Embarkation begins at 8:00 pm with the Captain's briefing about 9:00. The boat will depart in time to get you diving the first thing Sunday morning. (NOTE: We have requested an "arrive no later than" time clarification and will post it as soon as we can but I believe it !)
Feb 15 Sunday: Overnight, the boat makes the passage to Vieques. You will have the chance to dive Vieques' remote dive sites and take advantage of the shore excursion and visit the spectacular Bioluminescent Bay (Bio Bay) If weather and timing permits! (If we do Bio Bay there will be a small add'l charge.)
Overnight, the Pilot will make the passage to St. Croix. (Crossing weather dependent.)
Feb 16 Monday: Wake up at the first dive site of the trip. Explore the unspoiled reefs of St. Croix. Immediately after breakfast, you will attend the site briefing and then the dive deck will be open until lunch. During lunch, the boat will move to a new site. Following your site briefing, the dive deck will be open for a full afternoon of diving. After dinner, the night dive will be on the same site as you dived in the afternoon, so you know the site and can focus on the nocturnal critters.
Feb 17 Tuesday: Wake up to some of the best diving in the USVI - all on St. Croix's beautiful North Shore Wall. The wall starts around 30 ft and reaches depths of 3,200 ft, and has a great variety of reef fish, nurse sharks, eagle rays and turtles.
Feb 18 Wednesday: You'll continue diving great sites along the North Shore of St. Croix; whether it's Salt Water Canyon, Little Cozumel, or Blue Chute, you will be sure to get your fill of bottom time.
Feb 19 Thursday: More wall diving or possibly some coral gardens are up for grabs as you wake to another fabulous day in paradise. This afternoon gives you time to off-gas and explore St. Croix. Frederiksted has a tropical Rain Forest and Whim Greathouse, a plantation restored to the way it was in the 1700s, there is also a fair amount of shops to peruse at your leisure. This time off the boat is an opportunity to experience this remote Caribbean island or to dive the pier. We should be able to dive the pier in the afternoon possibly twice and in the evening if conditions permit.
Feb 20 Friday: Another chance to dive St. Croix. New and different dive sites for some of the greatest diving this island has to offer!
Feb 21 Saturday: The boat has arrived back at the dock. Disembarkation is at 8:00 am. We will transport you and your gear back to the airport in San Juan. NOTE: Please schedule flights AFTER NOON and REMEMBER DAN's recommended waiting period between repetitive diving and flying.

Boat Diving Coming Soon! Shore Diving There wiill be no shorediving on this trip as it is a liveaboard offering 4-5 dives daily. Night Diving You can do a night dive every night of the trip that one is possible and we are not doing a crossing or on the last day before departure. Max Depth: ?? ft Water Temp: ave low 80's degrees F Air Temp: low 80's - degrees. However, water temp is usually a few degrees lower than air temp so you may want to bring a boat coat to stay warm between dives.

VISA INFORMATION:
Per Nekton's webiste No passport is required for US Citizens to dive either Eastern Puerto Rico or St Croix. If traveling from other countries you will need a passport to enter. You will clear customs in PR and you will need proof of legal identity.

IMPORTANT TRIP UPDATES:
1. School Supplies: As is our tradition we take school supplies on our trips to the under priviledged children of the countries we visit while diving and Eastern Puerto Rico and St Croix are no exception. We will have several orphanages to bring relief to. One of the non-diving afternoons we will take whoever would like to join us and drop off the school supplies to the kids. I have seen grown men tear up at the look on their faces when they see us.
So PLEASE keep your eye out for school supplies on sale as these items are extremely expensive in the countries we visit. Remember a child can play with a can or a box and use great imagination pretending it is a castle, fort, car or space capsule. But they can not make do as well when they need school supplies so that they can learn and better themselves.

Q. What is the actual transfer fee from the airport to the boat and back?
A. It is $75 round trip or $37.50 each way.
Q. What is the cost of the private taxi and when is it reasonable to use it?
A. The private taxi is a minimum of $75 one way and could be $100 each way. The point you would use it is if you missed the last shared shuttle.
Q. How long is the shuttle ride to the boat and from the boat to the airport?
A. Depending on stops and traffic approx 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. (More if there is an accident.)
Q. When is the LATEST I can arrive at the boat?
A. The latest you can arrive at the boat is 7:30pm. So assuming 1 hr 15min shuttle ride and 45-60 minutes to get off the plane and get your luggage you would need to arrive at the airport by approx 5:15pm which is why the boat says the last shuttle can accommodate flights arriving at or before 5pm.
Q. When does the boat depart?
A. The boat will depart approx 8 to 9pm on our day of arrival so it is imperative that everyone arrive before 5pm on the 14th!
Q. If I arrive a day or so early where will the shuttle pick me up?
A. You will need to return to the the USPS Office which is about 20 yds outside of Baggage Claim at the airport. This is where EVERYONE will be met by the driver.
Q. Are there any landbased tours included in the pkg?
A. YES...you will be able to leave the boat if you wish in St Croix and toodle around the City of Fredericksted where you'll find a 17th century plantation fully restored, tropical rainforest, shops and the town pier. There may be a small fee for visiting inside the plantation etc but you can dive the town pier for no additional charge.
Q. What is the $20 per person communication fee?
A. In the event that one of us was hurt during the trip the satellite fees usually reach a couple of thousand dollars very rapidly. This fee helps to offset those costs.
Q. Is there a back to back discount for diving 2 weeks in a row?
A. Yes if you dive the week after our trip, the week will be discounted to $1495 vs $1795. (This is a net price inclusive of all discounts.)
Q. What is the non-diver price?
A. We have confirmed it is $100 off or $1345 base price vs $1445 for this trip. (Early payment and premier member discounts still apply so the trip could be a low as $1295 for the base trip.)
Q. What are the water and air temps during Feb?
A. They will be in the low 80's and stay relatively constant. However the water will be a couple of degrees lower than the air temps so you may wish to bring a boat coat to stay warmer between dives.
PLEASE obtain trip insurance - IT IS OPTIONAL BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS TRIP ...it is VERY inexpensive and will protect your investment. You can purchase it right online as well as check quotes etc. It is very economical and averages about $ for this trip.
