Fiji "Pearl of the South Pacific" Update:
Resort Info: We will be staying at a lovely resort Dive Kadavu - which has just 10 bures (Fijian word for Bungalows) & accommodates a maximum of only 22 guests at any one time. (We will only have 12 people on this trip but so far the remaining resort is still open!) Each bure has it's own bathroom (with hot water), ceiling fans, bed-lamps, queen size bed, or 2 singles, verandah, fly screening, fridge, external rinse shower etc. Two of the bures have two bedrooms which will accommodate up to four people however we will only put 3 in these rooms if we get enough for a triple or two. Please note we can NOT guarantee triple occupancy if the rooming does not work out. The remaining eight bures can each accommodate 1, 2, or 3 people however we'll only put 1 or 2 in them. Built in a more modern - traditional style, they blend into the lush gardens and are roomy enough to allow space for relaxing in your private time.
All bures have direct access to the beach, dive shop, dining/lounge rooms, bars and activities. They are powered with 240V electricity which is generated by the resort's own power plant. An inverter system is used between 9.30pm & 7am, which powers fans & lights.
How to Book: SD honors a first come and first served premise that is driven by posting in our community. Once a trip has been filled from the "My Check & Documents in the Mail List" with CONFIRMED deposits/pymnts we will open an official waiting list for the trip. WHAT YOU'LL SEE:
Kadavu Island is located approx 100kls (60mls) south of Suva, the capital of Fiji. It is the fourth largest of the 300 odd islands in Fiji and is virtually undeveloped. The island is surrounded by coral reefs with magnificent palm fringed beaches and rugged terrain. At the southwestern end lies Nabukulevu, an extinct volcano. The length is approx 80kls (50 miles) and the width varies. The native population of some 12,000 still live quite traditionally in 72 villages scattered throughout the island. As there are few roads, transport is mainly by boat. Vunisea, the only town on the island, is located near the airport and boasts of a post office, hospital, police station and boarding school. Dive Kadavu is located in a pristine part of the world, that major development has not yet affected.
For many years we have taken the lead with our own campaign of environmental awareness. The management, staff and local villages have all been trained and educated in many factors that could impact our local area. We have fought to have marine reserves declared. We use an invertor systems to reduce the running times on our generators. All dive sites used by Dive Kadavu use property place moorings and we have an awareness campaign for all our guests. Our paradise will continue while we all continue to protect it.
SCHEDULED ITINERARY
While YOUR personal Fijian Experience may vary due to weather and conditions, the outline below will give you a good feel for the exciting week in store for you!
Days Prior to start of our trip: If you wish to arrive early or want to combine other diving adventures in conjuntion with this one let us know. We will need MOST of you to use our air contract we have committed too which has a fixed departure but variable return.NOTE:
May 23 Saturday/May 25 Monday: You will fly into Los Angeles at least 3 hrs before the international flight (airport code LAX). From Los Angeles, we'll fly to Fiji on the 23th at about 10:30pm and we'll arrive in Fiji on the 2nd of March around 5:30am. We'll retrieve our luggage and recheck it for our Kadavu flight. If we are a large group we'll be on several planes going to Kadavu. (I'll have info on luggage restraints etc. posted shortly. Air Pacific took over SunAir so we'll have more reasonable weight limits, however we need to be extremely moderate so that our luggage arrives WITH us and not a few days later!)
From the Kadavu airport we'll travel by boat to the resort. The resort is on the 4th largest island in Fiji but one of the least developed so very pristine! Upon arriving in the resort you can settle in, we'll have a resort and dive briefing and you can sneak shore dive in if you like or just rest for the glorious week ahead of us!
May 26th Tuesday to May 31st Sunday: These 6 days will be our group package dives in the morning off the boats. Of course we have unlimited shorediving and it is quite good! Three (3) meals a day...you sign up for your dinner choices at breakfast...a quick siesta...and its Happy Hour time at the beach bar. Dinner follows Happy Hour where locals from the village next door often come and play for us. They are very good. An early evening for some follows dinner and socializing, some will do a shore night dive and some will continue to enjoy the ambiance of the Beach Bar. All in all...it will be a vacation you will never forget!
June 1st Monday: Weather permitting we'll do an optional day of diving with the Mantas. Actually we'll be doing small groups to the Mantas throughout the week if the weather looks good. There is an add'l price for the manta dive as it is a 3 dive excursion to the other side of the island OR you can trade in one of your pkg (2) tank dives and add a small balance to the price. (If this option is available...I'm checking with the resort) otherwise this day will be free for activities and sightseeing or more diving. The Mantas are exciting diving and for some worth the entire price of admission of the trip! These creatures are HUGE and they are amazing. The water is filled with food and the mantas are priceless. If you do not wish to do the Mantas you can do an optional day of diving on the boat or shore or just relax. Sunday is also Church day for the village and attending their service is a treat to consider adding to your cultural awareness of these wonderful people.
Scheduled Included Activities: Throughtout the week we'll be doing local sightseeing and activities. We have a waterfall tour and hike scheduled (bring good walking shoes) and the Meke which is a traditional Fijian Dance and festival where we'll do a Kava Ceremony with the locals at the village. You will be entertained and moved by this experience. We also have a traditional Fijian Dinner planned for you called a Lovo. We'll be treated to traditional Fijian foods served in the traditional manner. This involves a pig cooked in a pit and if you are vegetarian or don't eat pork let us know but the feast will have so many other foods including vegetarian that you'll be stuffed and your culinary senses delighted! At some time during the week we'll go to the school and bring our school supplies to the children. In appreciation they will sing for us and dance with us. You do not want to miss this encounter. It is the highlight of the trip for many and it will touch everyone. The innocence will touch you and for some indeliably leave a bit of Fiji in your heart forever!
June 2nd Tuesday: This is the day to pack, sleep in a bit later than usual, pay your bills if you haven't already and say goodbye to friends...both the ones you've made at SingleDivers.com and the resort. Our flight leaves at 1:45 but we we'll leave quite a bit earlier to get to the airport by boat, watch the new group of visitors unload and then reload and take off.
June 2nd Tuesday NIGHT INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS & ARRIVAL IN LAX: Our flights leave at 10pm and arrive at 1:20pm in LAX on the SAME DAY June 2nd. Do not schedule your return flight from LAX inside of 2 hours and you should allow 3 hours as this is a HUGE airport processing many people. That means that no return flights home should be before 4 or 4:20 to be ensured of not missing your domestic flight home.

June 4th Thursday: For those who opt for the add'l 2 extra days this is your date of departure and of course you get 2 extra days of diving, hotel, meals etc. for only $480 more.
Boat Diving We will have a 2 tank am boat dive daily for 6 days. One of those days can essentially be upgraded to the 3 tank Manta excursion on the other side of the island. (This is where King Kong was filmed and is very beautiful!) Dive sites range from 15 to 30 minutes away and we often stop in between dives to play coconut horseshoes during our surface interval.Shore Diving There is unlimited shorediving available. Night Diving There is usually one boat night dive during the week and of course unlimted night shorediving available. IMPORTANT TRIP UPDATES:
1. School Supplies: As is our tradition we take school supplies on our trips to the under priviledged children of the countries we visit while diving and Fiji was one our first islands to take supplies too! We will have several orphanages to bring relief to. One of the non-diving afternoons we will take whoever would like to join us and drop off the school supplies to the kids. I have seen grown men tear up at the look on their faces when the children see us they are so excited. (And in Fiji the children will sing for us. It is an AMAZING experience!)
So PLEASE keep your eye out for school supplies on sale as these items are extremely expensive in the countries we visit. Remember a child can play with a can or a box and use great imagination pretending it is a castle, fort, car or space capsule. But they can not make do as well when they need school supplies so that they can learn and better themselves.

Q. How come I see similar pkgs for a LOT less money? Isn't all of Fiji the same?
A. No Fiji is NOT the same. We will be flying from the main island of Nadi to a small private lesser dove island of Kadavu where the diving is more pristine and the villiage more as its always been for centuries. Many people offer pkgs to Fiji for $2300 to $2500 but they are for 1 week which is only 4 or 5 days of diving making it a very rushed week/ However its been my experience that you really need to do this as a minimum of 8 nites with 6 days of diving to really feel that you've been on vacation and to recover from the international flights. Plus you've gone a long way so you'll want to make the most of it!

Hotel Amenities: - Dive Kadavu Beach Resort doesn't need to build a swimming pool, we have the biggest pool in the world - the Pacific Ocean. Clean sandy base, aqua water and no chemicals! - Makes swimming such a pleasure.
Just sixty feet along the beach from the resort are some nice coral heads - Great for snorkeling.
Kayaks, Paddleboards, Body boards: are all available for guest use, free of charge. Dive gear, Snorkeling gear and Underwater Cameras are available for hire.
Fishing: can be arranged either in a resort boat or village boat.
The lounge: area has a Library of approx two thousand paperbacks, hard cover books and magazines for those that enjoy reading.
Ice Machine: The ice machine is self serve
Water: Fiji bottled water is for sale at the bar. Clean, pure filtered water is available for free.
Banking: There are no banks on Kadavu. Should you need to have cash, we can exchange $US & $Aust. The resort accepts travellers checks, US cash, Fijian cash, Visa & Mastercard. Please Note that American Express is not accepted.
Bars: We have two Bars, the Lounge Bar and the Beach Bar. Both are lovely spots to view the sunset. The Lounge Bar is open daily from 11.00am to 9.30pm daily. We stock an extensive range of wines, spirits and Fijian beers. Naturally the Cocktail of the Day is always available. Beach bar opens in the afternoon until dinner.

Catering: Please advise us in advance if you require anything special. It may be vegetarian meals, a birthday or some other special occasion.
Check-in/Check-out times: Guests may check into their rooms from 2.00pm or earlier if the room is ready. Check out time is 11.00am.
Church Services: - There is a lovely church in the village next to the resort. Guests of the resort are invited to attend the Sunday Services. (THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL CULTURAL EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE MISSED REGARDLESS OF RELIGIOUS AFFLIATION.)
CreditCards: The resort accepts Mastercard & Visa ONLY for incidentals. A small fee for using your card will be charged. Please bring cash from home for your intended needs. We don’t accept American Express.
DressCode: The resort is a very casual environment. We suggest that you dress to the standard that you would like whilst at Dive Kadavu. The Fijian people are very modest and we ask that you respect their customs and traditions by avoiding revealing clothing outside the resort. IF YOU OWN SARONGS PLEASE BRING THEM. Many times it is MOST suitable to wear one and the resort does sell them as well as have a few to lend out. Yes this includes guys...you'll be asked out of respect to wear one for certain festivies...but its worth it and you all look great too!
DrinkingWater: The resort collects its own water from rainfall for use in showers, etc. Clean pure filtered water is available for free. Bottled water is available for purchase from the bar.
Electricity: The resort produces its own power through the day via a generator. For the times that the generator is not running, we operate on an invertor system. Please ask the staff before plugging in anything that uses a lot of power i.e. hairdryer. The power is 240 volts/50 cycles. Current generator hours are 7 am – 9am and 4pm - 9.30pm. Our inverter runs at other times for use of lights and ceiling fans.
Charging Camera Batteries: Regarding camera batteries, we can charge camera batteries from a power point in the office any time during the day, or camera batteries can be charged in guests bures during the generator hours.
Fishing: Fishing Charters are available for light game + game fishing. We do not provide bottom fish for environmental reasons.
Hospital Services: There is a well-equipped hospital situated in Vunisea near the Kadavu airport. It takes about 15 minutes by boat to get there.
Internet: We do have a complementary computer that one guest can use at a time for brief internet access. Our service is dial up so it is very slow. (CHECKING TO SEE IF THERE IS A CHARGE FOR THE ACCESS.)
Laundry: Because of the damage that detergent does to the marine ecosystem, we do not offer a laundry service for guests. Please attempt to minimise your need for laundry.
Pool: We have one of the largest pools in the world…. The Pacific Ocean! Our all tide beach offers soft white sand and the perfect place to take a splash.
Restaurant: Located in the elevated dining area, we serve a variety of local and international dishes. Meals are ordered off the blackboard or buffet style. We always have fresh fish available when it is caught.
Telephone Calls: Because of the isolated location, the resort only has 1 radio telephone link. Urgent calls can be made at a cost of US$5 per minute.
Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Fiji. In fact it individual tipping to the staff is discouraged. They do however have a Staff Fund box located in the office if you would like to contribute. Gratuities are distributed to all the staff, even those that you don’t get to see, at Christmas AND the resort uses the tips to offer scholarships to young people on the island. This is the fairest system and is the way that the chief and elders of the village want to see it done. Since tips can be designated for local scholarships, SD will collect tips on behalf of the group as we usually do only ear mark them for local scholarships since these scholarships ensure that the young locals continue to learn how to take care of the island and the water while preserving both for future diving generations! We are sorry we can not accept your tips on credit card at this time.
Transport: Once you are on the island there are very few roads. In fact the resort can only be reached by water.

TRIP INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS TRIP. PLEASE obtain TRIP insurance as it is VERY inexpensive and will protect your investment. REMEMBER IF YOU MISS THE BOAT….YOU MISS THE TRIP! You can purchase it right online as well as check quotes etc .

DIVE INSURANCE IS MANDATORY FOR THIS TRIP. DIVE insurance is VERY inexpensive. Even if you have insurance that you think covers DIVING ACCIDENTS and air lifts…it is CHEAP to get a supplemental policy to ensure you are cared for.
