Looking at this issue from a different angle, the Internet is also a marketing tool. Some people are easily searched so their business may be located. Businesses are not nameless faceless entities.Just to show you how privacy is eroding with the open nature of the Internet I would like you to do the following. Go here and type in your first name, your job, your city and the word scuba. I tried this for a few people I know on the board and almost invariably they were found in the top 5 returns.
If you have multiple words in your job or town name then place them in quotes. "Director of IT" or "San Francisco" for example.

Lots of websites, like the aforementioned property appraisers office, have a line in the website code that tells the search engines to not index that page. So you can goolge (etc) my name or address or anything all day long and it will not give you a link to the property appraisers office..... but I assure you I am there and more information than you would care to know is there!

Just because you don't find anything when you use google or yahoo or msn search or aol or altavista or ask doesnt mean there is not a lot of stuff about you 'out there'.

Another place is the Clerk of Court. I use the property appraiser website on a regular basis and then the Clerk's website to search on people. I do apoloize if anyone finds this offensive....I want to know if someone has a serious criminal history or if they are telling the truth in some instances. This has saved me some headaches.

True. However, that only stops the scrupulous search engines. There are ones out there that grab everything. A locked door only keeps out an honest man...Lots of websites, like the aforementioned property appraisers office, have a line in the website code that tells the search engines to not index that page.

Can't you go blind from doing that?
