Something really cool came my way this week...brand spanking new dive equipment. I am now in possession of a backplate and wing (DSS- black with just enough pink for my liking :P ), OMS first stage with the works, and a dive computer... courtesy of some great deals made with WreckWench herself and OTWdiver.

Now, I know I'll be asking them questions right and left about this equipment as I take it to Grenada in two weeks... but I want to give them a little break by asking all of you a question to start...

What types of maintenance do you do on your equipment to keep it "like new" and performing the way it needs to perform, and what do you leave to the dive shop pros?

Thanks in advance!

Rinse out the bladder with fresh water at the dive shop or wharf by unscrewing a exhaust or vent valve and filling and emptying 3 times from all vents and inflator valve. Half inflate bladder with air and dry as much as possible before packing and plane ride home. Hang bladder 1/2 with air when stored at home. I let the Pros at LDS do most of the other maintance.

Did you get the Kydex plate???

I decided on the soft back plate route. I should receive Santa's gift to self next week. Unfortanatly I'll have to wait untill March before I can field test it.
Good diving with your new gear.

Watch Kamala'a routine for rinsing her first stage after every dive. :P I don't do it, but my gear slumbers in the closet much of the year...

I don't just rinse my bladder with fresh water, they make a "conditioner" that kills ocean bacteria and keeps it supple after the salt water diving. I use it every time I get back from a trip, faithfully, and store the bladder with 1/2 or slightly better full of air as Stan said.

I have my 1st/2nd stage, octo, etc. inspected every 12 months, and overhauled every other year, all done by my LDS.

If I'm missing something, tell me now so I have time to get it done before the Fiji trip! :P

For BC and wetsuit: good rinse out after finishing diving, including inside the bladder. No other work after getting home, if already dry.

Regulator: Good rinse as much as possible at resort/boat after finishing diving for day and at end of trip. It's a Scubapro -- so therefore it get annual servicing by Scubapro authorized technician... thus maintaining free parts for life warranty. I have received replacement of significant portions of first stage on three occasions due to having the MK20UL. I love getting a new regulator every ~4 years for free!

Mask: If water contains lots of minerals, no fresh water rinse at the end of day. If normal water then rinse at end of day.

Fins: Rinse salt water off at end of trip.

Other than the above, the gear just stays in the dive bag being completely ready for it's next excursion once it is home.

Me: Shower off after getting off boat, and at least daily.

BTW, Lembeh Resort uses kids Strawberry Shampoo to rinse out the wetsuits. It did leave a pleasant scent on the wetsuit!.

NO, NO! UWfan has a DSS setup, while rinsing my bladder I lost the gasket from the exhaust valve, I called DSS for a replacement and got an ear full. They do not recommend taking the valves off!

I do all of my own maintenance except for the regs.
