SPECIAL TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:

1. SPECIAL EVENTS & HAPPENINGS: Stay tuned for cool things being planned for this Single's Week!

2. School Supplies: As is our tradition, we take school supplies on our trips to the under-privileged children of the countries we visit while diving. Roatan is no exception and we will have several orphanages to help out. One of the non-diving afternoons, we will take whoever would like to join us and drop off the school supplies to the kids. This can be fairly emotional as I have seen grown men tear up at the look on their faces when the children see us.
So PLEASE keep your eye out for school supplies on sale as these items are extremely expensive in the countries we visit. Remember a child can play with a can or a box and use great imagination pretending it is a castle, fort, car or space capsule. But they can not make do as well when they need school supplies so that they can learn and better themselves.

3.Orphange Crab Races & Pig Roast: Bay Island Beach Resort innovated the now infamous Pig Roast and Orphanage Crab Races where you buy a crab and race it for King or Queen of the CRABS! :fish2: The proceeds go to help the children of the islands POOREST orphanage and have helped to buy books, even help them to start to build a real school house! All that and its LOADS OF FUN too! :birthday:

4. Activities and Fun for Single and Married but Buddyless Divers! Come join in to LOTS of fun in the sun...have fun meeting other single and buddyless divers or pamper yourself a little! There is something for everyone!

Additional Trip Information:

Telephone Calls

There are no phones in the guest rooms. We have a phone that guests may use in the Front Desk/Gift Shop. The number of this phone 504-445-3020. From the US, please dial 011 first. Calling out from the office is $2.00/min. We charge a $2.00 connection fee for busy signals, operator-assisted calls and non-connecting calls.

Satellite phones usually receive on the island. GSM cell phones will usually work as long as you have activated an international roaming plan.

For incoming calls:

The Honduras ring tone is a long beep. If you hear a short, fast series of beeps, the line is busy. The person calling will reach our front desk staff who will be happy to take a message. Because guests are usually out on the dive boats or exploring the island, we suggest that the caller leave a good time for the guest to call back.

How To Contact The Resort:

Resort Bay Islands Beach Resort Sandy Bay, Roatan Bay Islands, Honduras Central America484-653-5346 (booking & reservations)011-504-445-3020 (Front Desk & Resort Office)011-504-445-3064 (fax)For questions, prices, bookings and information: escape@bibr.com

Airport Arrival/Departure and Taxes

As part of your package, we will meet you at the airport. We will have a sign saying Bay Islands Beach Resort & will be waiting for you just on the other side of the baggage scanner. Once everyone has cleared through customs, the resort van will take you to the resort. We will take you back to the airport at the end of your stay. Let us know if you would like assistance with checking in for your flight. The driver will be happy to help you check-in. As of January 2008, the departure tax is $34 per person. The departure fees & airport fees change frequently, so please look at your confirmation letter for the latest details. This can be paid in US dollars or lempiras.

Ticket Confirmation

We will collect your return tickets at check in & reconfirm your flights from Roatan. If you are flying Continental or TACA, we will get your boarding passes in advance. If you choose to hold on to your ticket, you will need to do your own reconfirmation & boarding passes.

Safety of Valuables

We have a safe in the office for guest use. You will not need any cash during the week unless you are going into town or buying something from a beach vendor. We suggest keeping your wallet & any other small valuables in the office safe.

Personal Shopper

We have a gift shop at the resort, but if you need medications, special toiletries or special gift shopping needs, we offer two different shopping services. You can leave a list with us. We will purchase the items you need & bill them to your room. Or, we provide a guided shopping service. The guided shopping service is perfect if you are looking for a special gift to take home. Guided shopping is fun but not necessary! If you like to explore you can head out on your own around the island. Ask at the Front Desk for names and directions to the places with the best deals. Guided shopping is also available for trips to the mainland including the San Pedro Sula & La Ceiba markets & the craft towns around Tegucigalpa. Please ask at the front desk for more information.

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop carries variety of items to make your life easier. We carry film, batteries, suntan lotion, bug spray, cactus juice, soap, toothbrushes, feminine products, and simple pharmacy items. If you need something other than what we have stocked, we will be happy to pick it up for you in town for no extra charge. We may not be able to get the brand you prefer, so please consider bringing your toiletries with you. Contact lens solution is very difficult to find, so pack your solutions in your carry-on!

The Gift Shop also carries t-shirts, sarongs, hammocks, carved wooden boxes, cigars, souvenirs and other craft items. If you don't see what you would like, just ask. We can arrange to get it for you- or we can set up a personalized shopping trip for you.

Pharmacy Pick Up

When available, we carry sudafed, benedryl, immodium & ibuprofen in the gift shop. If you need to pick up other medications, we can get them from the local pharmacy. These medicines are in generic form & are not priced or packaged the same as in the US. We suggest bringing along any over-the-counter medications you might need. Please don't assume that you will be able to find your prescription or OTC medication on the island. We recommend that you bring your medications with you.

Exchanging Currency

The stores on the island will accept both US dollars & lempiras (the Honduran currency) We suggest working in US dollars during your stay. Most of the gift stores have their items priced in dollars. If you spend dollars, you could be given either dollars or lempiras in change.

Exchanging money at the bank is very time consuming. It is better to bring travelers checks in US dollars in small increments. Most places will not take traveler's checks over $50. Many places will not be able to make change for anything larger than a $20. American Express Traveler's Checks are considered the standard. VISA or Mastercard travelers checks are accepted at the discretion of the shop owner. Credit Union travelers checks are very rarely accepted.

Traveler's Checks

At the resort, we accept American Express, VISA, Mastercard traveler's checks only. With 24 hours notice, we will be happy to get them cashed in town for you for a service fee of 6%. We will try to cash your checks into US dollars, but if US cash is limited we will only be able to cash your checks into lempiras. You can use your traveler's checks to pay your bill or to leave a tip without cashing them first. We do not add a service fee if you pay with US traveler's checks or credit cards.

You can use traveler's checks around the island in place of cash. You may get your change in US dollars or Lempiras. Be sure to bring your passport along for identification. You must sign the traveler's check exactly as you signed the first time.

Credit Cards at the Resort

We accept VISA, Mastercard, American Express, and Diner's Club at the resort for purchases, paying your bill & tips. Sorry, we do not take Discover at the resort. You can only use your Discover card in the US office.

We do not add a service fee for using credit cards. We do not make cash advances, but we will be happy to help you get a cash advance from the bank in town.

Credit Cards on the Island

Many of the businesses on Roatan will charge a fee of 6-12% for using a credit card- esp at restaurants. Check first if you don't see the rate posted.

Scheduling Activities

We will happily schedule your activities for you. We have an activities scheduling sheet to help you plan your week. Once the Front Desk has your list, we will make the arrangements & confirm them with you. We will help you arrange transportation if needed.

Mailing Letters & Postcards

We have postcards in the gift shop or you can pick them up in town. We will stamp & mail a postcard for you. Mail service from Honduras to locations outside of Honduras is very unreliable & extremely slow. Expect at least 4 weeks for delivery. The longest delivery time we know of is 2 years! Please check with the Front Desk for costs.

Internet & Fax Access

We have a computer with internet access available for guest use. Cost for using the internet is 0.25 per minute. You can also buy a week package for wireless connection in the bar using your own laptop for $10 a week.

We have a fax available for sending and receiving. The guest fax number is 011-504-445-3064 Please make sure that all incoming faxes have the guest name clearly marked at the top. We deliver faxes to the guest rooms in the afternoon. If you need your fax sooner, you may come by the office at any time. Faxes cost $1.00per page to send & $1.00 a page to receive.

TRIP INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS TRIP. PLEASE obtain TRIP insurance as it is VERY inexpensive and will protect your investment. REMEMBER IF YOU MISS THE BOAT….YOU MISS THE TRIP! You can purchase it right online as well as check quotes etc .

What is the Spooky Channel?

Posted Image

Spooky Channel is a natural channel formed by a land stream which flows into the sea. ( #5 on the picture above) On the surface, the crack narrows to 5-8 feet across. Below, divers swim past giant coral and enter a 45' wide, 90' deep hourglass shaped tunnel which leads through the reef and out onto the wall. As divers enter the channel, they navigate through giant coral heads which are home to a huge green moray, barracuda, octopus, crabs, lobster, shrimp, conch, parrotfish, grouper, squid, and cuttlefish. We have found 6 different types of eels in Spooky. You will also see occasional turtles & spotted eagle rays. Through the tunnel, the visibility drops, light enters through the crack in shafts and bounces in the cavern. Observant divers can find and follow a side tunnel. As you come through the channel and out on to the reef, everything suddenly opens, the water turns crystal clear and hundreds of Roatan's beautiful tropical fish come into view as the wall falls away beneath you. There are many different ways to dive Spooky. Many divers like to explore the base of Spooky. Others swim through the channel just under the overhanging ledges, explore the unique architecture of the channel & then turn west on the wall (#4) and explore the cracks that extend back into the reef. If you stay on the eastern side (#6) of the channel, you will swim towards Ben Jones Front Porch, another fabulous site.

Important Trip Updates:

I am new to the single divers website and am interested in getting some more information about your trips. I was looking at the Roatan trip for September. Do you have people from all over and all ages and experience levels that go on these trips?

Yes we do. Divers range from about 25 to 55, we average about 40% women…sometimes more on our trips…several have been essentially ‘chick trips’ with more gals than guys and we have every one from novices with 6 dives to master scuba diving instructors on trips. EVERYONE is welcome and we love new(er) divers. We even offer an innovative program for new divers that is part divebuddy/dive mentor. Its called Rent-A-Buddy and you hire a private DM to be your buddy so you can focus on YOU and YOUR diving and not worry about anything or anyone else. Your buddy will also mentor you providing customized feedback on YOUR diving helping to reinforce GOOD habits or develop GOOD habits right from the start. Everyone who participates in this program RAVES about it. Its quite reasonable…$50 per day or $150 for the week.

I noticed in the "who's going" section that most of the people have nitrox, is that a problem if I don't?

Absolutely not but many divers find it will allow them to dive more since we are doing 3 boat dives a day. We’ll have an instructor on the trip so if you want to take the class while you are there it’s a great way to combine diving and training. If you decide to take the course on your own that is fine too!

Do I need to sign in as a member to be able to access all the forms that are needed?

Yes you will need to register on the site with a screen name (choose a fun diving or personality related one if you can) and you’ll need to be logged into the site to post. Once you tell us you are going on a trip with us we send you a link to the forms in case you have not found them along with the password for the forum. (Note it is NOT the same as your login password. To obtain the password email trips@singledivers.com) To sign up for a trip simply POST in the topic/thread that you want to go with us, your payment is enroute and then tell us if you’ll need extra days, if you want double or single occupancy, if you want nitrox or air, etc.

What would be the easiest way to pay with my credit card for this, could I call you and pay that way?

You can pay with credit card either via paypal (if using paypal go to paypal.com and send the money to email address kamala@singledivers.com If you want to pay via traditional credit card you’ll need to fill out our credit card authorization form (found in the forms forum) and email it as a pdf to me to kamala@singledivers.com or fax it to me to 214-350-2558. Please note that all non-cash payments will incur a 3% fee to cover the one that I am charged.

Is it more common for people to book their own flights, or do you do most of the travel arrangements for people?

Actually most people do book their own flights. We are happy to help but charge a nominal $25 booking fee for researching and booking flights for you unless the flight is part of the trip package and then the price is covered in the trip cost already. Let us know if you’d like us to make travel arrangements for you. We simply add the $25 fee to your total invoice.

Can I Rent-A-Buddy for this trip...how does it work?

And yes you can rent-a-buddy for the trip...we have a limited number of DM's/Instructors available for you to rent to help you focus on only yourself and not worry about being someone's buddy or to allow you to improve your air consumption and bouyancy etc. You are hiring a professional 'coach' to help you reinforce your recent open water skills or to help you refresh them or to just basically help to mentor you. The price is $50 per day or $150 for the week. If you need your rent-a-buddy to do your first night dive it is recommended that you consider the night dive specialty or even just the night dive sign off of AOW...Advanced Open Water via one of our instructors. If not please include another $25 for your Rent-A-Buddy to guide you through your first night dive(s).

I willl need Rental Gear. What do I do?

Let us know what you need for rental gear? We will have Cochran computers available that you can use to do DAN research AND avoid having to rent. As for other rental gear...please let us know and we'll get you the prices.

I want to bring School Supplies for the kids. What is best to bring?

The basics are always hard to come by...notebooks, paper pads, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, markers, etc. Please bypass the ones that are more like toys. And please bring them in one of the million canvas totebags you get from conventions etc....that way they stay together AND a child will end up with a book bag...plus we don't add more plastic to the already challenged environment. You might also pick up some cheap 'readers' from the dollar stores...they will help kids who have a problem reading without glasses. And if you do not want to bring supplies but would rather donate money that is fine too. School supplies have a 50% import tax on them so they become very expensive in the country. That is why paper is good to bring as it is heavy to import and expensive once it is on island. But ANYTHING you bring will be gladly accepted and put to good use. NOTE: Do not pack a box to bring supplies in. Use a suitcase so it looks like it is your personal items. A box will usually be opened and then you will be taxed on the supplies you are bringing in...EVEN if they are for charity.

Rental Gear:
Click Here! for information about rental gear prices. NOTE: If you do not want to rent a computer but would like to use one for free in exchange for doing some simple research for DAN (Diver's Alert Network) then let us know. We have a limited number of computers available but we try to reserve them for students taking our nitrox class and those diving without a computer at all.

When you're down there, maybe you can get my nitrox analyzer back . . .
"When you shoot underwater, you have limited time, subject matter that rarely sits still, let alone cooperates, and exposure that changes moment to moment. It's a place where you have to constantly wrangle light, composition, subject and depth, and then find a way to be creative." - Eric Cheng

Hi! This is my first time booking a trip with Single Divers ... I'm very excited about this trip. I've been to Roatan before (Coco View Resorts); this is where I learned to LOVE scuba diving. Please put me down as going, and the 'check is in the mail'. Ami
