Hi y'all! We will be docking in Galveston Channel near Pelican Island soon and I would like to take a walk about town. :cool2: First lof all, is there "town" in that area? Could anyone suggest a restaurant? I may have some days there, depending on weather. Don't know exactily when but I am open for suggestions to kill some time. Thanks in advance, Zach

When are you going to be there? I might be able to make it down there. I haven't been there since the hurricane, so I'm not sure what's left as far as resturants go. Mantarraya should be able to give us some advice, she lives on the island.

I do indeed live on the island, although I've spent precious little Post-Ike time at home as I have been buried with work as the mayor of Houston decided he likes my web-based mapping applications, and this has spawned a whole family of related apps. I also have been heavily involved in the damage assessment for the Houston area after Ike, and pre-planning for future hurricanes. However, if you do get in town, drop me an email or PM and I'll give you my cell phone number and perhaps we can get together for a G-town tour.

As for the state of my well-loved and fragile little island, there are now several shops open in the downtown area, and quite a few bars. Seems like it is easier to get bars back open, and heaven knows, many of us needed a good drink to get through all this hurricane mess. The Landry restaurants that are right on the ship channel are also open (Willie G's, Pier 21/Fisherman's Wharf, maybe even Joe's Crab Shack, but I am not a huge fan of these since they tend to not use fresh local seafood and instead buy it out of a Sysco food truck). I will say the oysters of the half shell - even at the Landry's restaurants - are killer this year. We had two dozen at Willie G's Saturday night to get our energy up for Mardi Gras bead-catching. I can highly recommend the Tsunami Tequila Emporium that has re-opened on the Strand, and they have made something of a business of hurricane recovery tourism, and I say more power to them, as this little island is hurting! There also several clubs on Post Office St downtown that are open. The really good Post Office St restaurants are still working on re-opening.

If you head out to the Seawall, almost everything is open - Gaido's and Casey's, Miller's Landing, etc. The beachside of the island just didn't get the surge damage that the bayside/downtown area did. The West End itself (where I live) is also in pretty good shape - with a good number of our restaurants open. However, that is a pretty long haul from downtown.

The local eateries in the Historic District such as Mosquito Cafe, The Original Mexican Cafe, and Sunflower Bakery and Cafe (all low to relatively low-cost) are also all now open. These are good lunchtime and breakfast choices.

The Yamato Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar on 61st St is excellent - one of the best of Japanese steakhouse style restaurants I have ever sampled. Their Spider Roll is to die for.

OMG! Thanks! You have no idea, or perhaps you do, how exciting it all sounds. So far in the last 10 weeks the biggest thing was to occasionally "go for a ride in the car" LOL. ..although we did eat at the "Mud Bug Palace" a couple of times. It was good... I always like my food poured onto the table from an old bus tray.... :cool1: I will keep in touch, Zach

Big city lights of Galveston Channel are a shinin' down on the Spree this morning. Yes! Don't know any details or schedules yet but it's good to be here. More later, Zach

Well shoot!! Looks like I will be away for a few days. I was hoping to be around when you came in......I would have made the drive to come see you. Enjoy Galveston and keep us informed on how long your stay will be.

I'm heading up to Dallas today for the Happy Hour, so I won't be able to come down and see you this weekend. :taz: If you are still here on Sunday or later, let me know. Galveston is only about a 20 minute ride from my house.

As a matter of fact we are on the way there now. Coming in for a day to stock up and chill out. I will most likely be trying to find a place to eat tonight. If anyone would care to join me just call. 561-371-4548. After we leave this time it's off to Freeport by the weekend and job completed the 15th. Wheels up for me on the 16th, YES!
