Hi Margaret!
I just got back from Cozy on Feb 28 and you see more shops closed now, fewer cruise ships, (most at any one time was 3) not 21! YIKES!!! like a few Christmas Days back, (a GOOD change for most divers!) You see graffiti now in on the island for the last few years, use to see none, I've been going there 20 years.
The party/parade for Fat Tuesday filled the streets with EVERYONE, baby's in strollers, pregnant women, old folks, and no one heard of ANY concerns. My only concern was that the street band I could hear from my room at Hotel Cozumel take a break, (they played till 4am for three nights before Fat Tuesday! Made me long for the days I could party till 4am, 4 nights in a row. :usflag:
Went over to the mainland to do a couple days of cenote diving, and out on Hwy # 307 things are quite a different scene with 4 military checkpoints to go thru in 30 miles. Our guide told us of 9 Mexican military men that had their heads removed for having stopped a drug shipment. I've driven that stretch south from Playa towards Aukaumal in a rental vehicle many times in the past and would not do that now.
I traveled with two blonde gals, lol (a Mexican guy favorite) but other then the occasional, "I promise to wait for you to return, alone,,,,, forever!", no concerns there either. I understand your fathers concern thou, these two gals mother (there sisters) told me how happy she was that I was going with them, to keep them safe, there really are not any concerns on Coxy, at this time. I did not check where you live Margaret, but I have NEVER been as concerned for my safety on Cozy as I have been in downtown Mpls on an occasional Sat. night, and I'm a local here. Its the same as others have stated, pretty much no matter where you go, dont get TOO wasted, dont flash TOO much cash, dont wear TOO flashy of jewelery, dont get TOO far off the beaten path, and if you do, dont look afraid, even if you are, ( JUST KEEP MOVING!)
You and your man go to Cozy and have a good time! T

Haven't made any decisions yet, but still thinking about choices. We would definitely fly directly into Cozumel. Mark is still thinking Florida, as we have never been there. ...we will see.

To all who read and posted...Y'all are GREAT! Thanks for the comments. I have really enjoyed reading them. Feel free to continue to add more to the topic.

**Victoria, thanks for your comments. I'm sure you have details. :usflag: Not sure I'm ready for those yet.
**Tammy (LLDN), I've only been thru the El Paso airport (VIVA Las Vegas, Baby!) I'm sure you experienced lots of adventures living there.

**Lee (Mantarraya)
, OMGosh, I'm so glad you don't work in the areas you used to be exposed to…saw you live in Galveston now…Sorry you had to face a new "battle" (with Ike). You are an amazing person!
**
Mark (Capn Jack)…LOVED the fine print in your post :birthday:
**
Kamala (WW), you're right, being that my hubby has border patrol connections, you'd think he would know of more info in Cozumel!!!!
**
Terry (Trinity), I can't imagine seeing only 3 ships there… That's weird. LOL on your stories, and glad you still were able to party! Thanks for your details. I live near Houston (near NASA, and my Dad lives in the west Houston), so yeah, we have crime here too ( :birthday: imagine that!). Still not sure what caused enough concern for him to call me. I hope to see him on Friday, and we will talk about it some more.

Take care everyone! -Margaret

Just FYI -

I just got back from a long weekend in Coz. No issues at all and no sign that anything has changed. In talking with some friends that live there... they felt that even flying into Cancun and doing the bus & ferry run over is still quite safe.

There are two check points between Cancun and Playa, but the tour busses are just waved on through.

Plenty of cruise ships that are still making Coz a port of call as well.

We had a blast and the diving was great as usual!!
