How does this PC-based packaged software manage all this? -

I think the way Turbo Tax and other taxes preparation software you buy in stores work is that they are empty formats, and once you get home you install the program on your computer and it asks you for what Zip Code, City and State your going to be filing in and then it downloads that particular Fed and State forms into the system so as you go thru the process of doing your taxes, its in the State with the current tax law changes already in front of you. Its pretty handy but it is a one-time purchase..meaning you have to buy a new Turbo Tax at full price each year and that was something I just found out when I tried to use last years TT software program to start my 2009 taxes.

Racer has pointed out how many taxes we are subject to..so the game is to find as many deductions as you can so you dont have to pay for taxes you dont really owe.

Tammy with her multible State, City and County taxes has to do it the ol fashion way..She Earns It :thankyou:

I've used Tax Cut software for a number of years...partly owing to doing both my own taxes and a relative's taxes (with a variety of special circumstances that might be considered one way or another depending on how you interpret tax code). Each year I install the new version of the software, download the changes and am ready to do my Federal taxes...to do state taxes I have to make a separate purchase for each state needed (thankfully for me just one) and repeat the process. The software asks about different "events" in my life to determine what information is needed to compute the tax owed and the deductions that can be taken...with the tax code changes for the year figured into the questioning process.

Some of the details like city taxes are computed depending on how your W-2's look. Years that I worked within the city of Denver, taxes were levied on my pay for the city....when I no longer worked within the city that was no longer an issue. The software figures all of that information.
