My plans have firmed up somewhat for my trip in a couple of weeks. I am tentatively planning to meet some people at Terranea/Marineland for a shore dive on Sat Aug 8. The backup site is Veteran's Park in Redondo Beach if it's too rough at Terranea. I am also looking to do a mid-week boat dive on Wed, Aug 12. There are two Open Boats running that day - Magician out of San Pedro, and Sundiver Express out of Long Beach.

Would be interested in local recommendations for either boat. Magician is closer to where I will be staying and has Nitrox available. Sundiver is a little cheaper and has a faster boat, but only offers Air tanks for rentals. It's basically a toss-up as far as I am concerned, so I could go with either one.

Just a follow up to my first post. I went out last week and met a buddy from the service and his wife in San Diego. We did thursday first dive on the Yukon and the next two in the Kelp near by. ( I have the sites in my log book) On friday we went to Coronado Island and did three there. Last but not least on Saturday we did the Yukon then the Ruby-E. So a total of 8 dives in three days. We went with the dive boat Louis Ann. They had open boat Thursday and Friday but we went through a dive shop to get on the charter on saturday. Bottom temps were 55 deg. and Vis up to 20 feet.

I did not take my mid weight thermals for my dry suit and I got a bit chilled toward the end of the third dives. The Sea Lions came out and played with us at Coronado island which to us right coast guys was outstanding!! All in all a good trip. :teeth: :)

Each wreck has a tale to tell about its life and its demise.

If you are observant while diving in dark places listen to the account each has to tell, You cannot come away unaffected.

Glad you had fun, and I am looking forward to my dives out there as well. I've heard good things about the Lois Ann - will have to try them sometime. And sea lions are just awesome - one of my most memorable dives was a sea lion encounter near Santa Cruz island in the northern Channels.

My plans...shore dive on Sat Aug 8... mid-week boat dive on Wed, Aug 12...

Southern California = "Hot And Sunny!" People were all over the beaches last week. Many of them attracted to the high surf.

Checking the sea conditions and forcasts should be higher on the ToDo list than usual. We've had at least one death on the Central Coast since the initial "flood warnings" last week, and it was not due to rip currents this time.

Has anyone tried Monterey Bay? The skies are overcast daily around the Golden Gate Bridge. It might be cooler weather here.

Seattle is HOT-HOT-HOT! There are giant octopus up here along with the kelp.
SDHH in Seattle this weekend? Hum? What did you say? I just need to know. Tell me it is so!

Terranea (Old Marineland) is a rough entry for a SoCal shore dive. Vets has lots of critters but my understanding is that it is largely a fine sediment bottom which may not bode well for kelp. I still vote for Catalina. Surface water temps were reported as high as 74 F this weekend and I got nearly 70 F at 50 ft.

A mainland dive boat is a good reasonable option to come over and do a few dives off our coast.

That's what I am told, but I will diving with some experienced folks who dive there often, so I am not anticipating any problems. There are two entries - one on the point, and one in a nearby cove (where the Marineland pier used to be). The point entry is supposed to be much more difficult, but at least we have the other options if it is too rough.
