Megladon Teeth...8 Million years old and OTHER prehistoric teeth/fossils a whopping 40-60 Million years old!!! Find them diving 4 dives a day on the Cooper River, SC October 1-4th, 2010. TRAVEL DAYS: Sep 30th and Oct 5th Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Join this exciting and rare diving excursion arriving in Charleston, SC where you'll take a quick taxi if flying in (approx 9 miles) to our new hotel the Sleep Inn to get settled in and prepare for Four (4) full days of 4 one hour dives...yes 4 full (1) hour BOAT dives looking for Megladon Shark Teeth ranging from 4-6 inches across as well as other prehistoric teeth, fossils, pottery and exciting finds in the famous Cooper River. The Cooper River, once part of the ocean is a hotbed of history and we can experience this unique diving opportunity with one of the most renown dive operators on the River. AND we can help document history while still keeping any artifacts we find! (See below for info on helping the State of SC). River diving is quite an art...many operators will dive the river every weekend where due to tides you can only get 2 dives in during the day or maybe 3. Off the Wall Dive Charters our dive operator picks only the weekends where the tides will let you get in 4 dives each a full hour! In other words, twice the opporunity to find teeth for the same price as everyone else! And knowing the river like Bill aka OTWDiver, owner of OffTheWallDiving.com, does, he will safely put us on the rich gravel beds full of teeth, guide us to the transition points where new teeth are being uncovered and share with us new spots that he is continuosly exploring so that we too can find these rare precious artifacts and LOTS of them! Don't miss this great opportunity limited to the first lucky 6 divers to do this unique and adventurous dive! And look for some special offers for ONLY SD members that OTWDiver will be offering us! Don't delay...only 6 people can go. Everyone is getting in on the excitement...see what Sharkdiving Magazine has to say about their first shark tooth expedition...

We are excited to offer our first Cooper River Megladon teeth shark tooth hunting trip! While we normally search out the live animals...no shark adventure would be complete without exploring the grand daddy of them all...the Megladon!

Cooper River, SC Megladon Shark Tooth & Artifact Hunting Trip for $875* d/o "Fly In" or $824* d/o "Drive In" (has one less night hotel) plus air/transport to Charleston, SC.(Less $50 discount to equal 2008 pricing if paid in full by March 25th, 2010) Don't Miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to find Megladon teeth, 1800 century bottles, Arrow Heads, and more! The Cooper River trip is limited to 6 people so don't delay! NOTE: The water SHOULD be warm if we have an Indian Summer or it may be in the mid to low 70's. If the wind is blowing or the air temps have dropped you will need a drysuit since we are doing so many dives. PLAN TO DIVE DRY ON THIS TRIP! ;) Posted Image

Cooper River, SC Availability Update:

SD honors a first come and first paid premise that is driven by posting in our community and using our online payment system. Once a trip appears to have filled up from the "My Check is in the Mail" and the confirmed deposits/pymnts we will open an official waiting list for the trip. As openings occur or deposits are not received, we'll open up the Waiting List for trip participants.

Please note that while you may send pm and email requests for availability, the official availability is always available in the main trip post. Thank You! -ww

Here is the full information on the trip:

TEMPS & CONDITIONS:

The weather in South Carolina is remarkably consistent all summer and perfect for this kind of diving. The summer temperatures range in the mid to high 80's during this time of year and the water temps are in the mid 80's making this truly diving in comfort! OCTOBER can be almost as warm if we have an Indian Summer staying in the mid to low 70's or drop into the high 60's if fall settles in early. The biggest issue could be wind/air temps so dry suits are recommended due to the long diving times. PLEASE PLAN TO DIVE DRY on this trip!

AIRFARE:

We'll fly into Charleston, SC which is where the Cooper River is located. Alternately you can fly into Columbia, SC which is a 1.5 hr drive or Atlanta but it is a 6 hr drive or you can fly into Greenville Spartenburg but that is approx a 3 hr drive. We'll be using domestic carriers so for a small $25 booking fee we'll make your arrangements for you otherwise you are more than welcome to make your own arrangements.

ARRIVAL:

Please plan to be in Charleston by 7:30 pm if you want to do a group dinner the night before. Otherwise we'll see you at breakfast at 6am the next morning in the hotel restaurant! The Sleep Inn is about 9 miles from the airport to the hotel so a quick taxi. You can also rent a car if you wish.

HOTEL INFORMATION:

We'll be staying at the Sleep Inn which is a quick taxi to and from the airport. A breakfast buffet is also included with your stay. The Hotel is conveniently located to the boat ramp where we'll depart for our trip. A Home Depot is nearby as well as numerous restaurants offering all types of fare. The hotel is across the street from the Ramada which has become a living legend in its own rights as many Military Reunions have been held there for all branches of the service dating back many many years. The surviving vets and war heroes line the walls with photo memorabilia of a bygone time...and the reminders that 'Freedom is not Free'. You'll certainly enjoy the trip down memory lane and may even meet a real American Hero or two staying at the hotel. :) Hotel Address for divers is:
7401 Northwoods Blvd
I-26 Exit 209
Charleston, SC 29406 US

Hotel Amenities

• Swimming Pool both indoor and outside
• Bar
• BBQ and picnic area

WHAT YOU'LL SEE: Posted Image

You'll be doing a night dive in the middle of the day. Its not muck diving...simply night diving in fresh water as you descend 20-40 feet to the bottom of the River. You'll drop in 'heavy' and as you descend to the bottom you'll see the water go from a red color to a dark tea color but with your lights on you'll have as much visibility as your light will give you. And more than enough to see the 'teeth' and artifacts in the gravel beds of the river bottom! You can drop straight down...or go down the anchor chain as a visual reference. (If opting to go along the anchor chain you will actually be moving up river along the chain so it will take you longer to reach the bottom. However it also means you will start your searching ahead of everyone else which could mean add'l finds for you.)

IMPORTANT TIDE AND TRIP UPDATE:

Feb 2010 Update: The dates will be Aug 13-16th which is 4 days of diving. We will not be able to get 2 boats this time so only 6 lucky divers will get to do this amazing trip! This trip will be opened for booking soon. Thank you, -ww

The tides are what allow for this trip to be successful. Too much and you can't hold your position looking for teeth...you are merely swept along the bottom. Too little and the silt won't move creating a black out situation even with a high intensity light. Just right and you will get (4) nearly perfect one hour dives in a day! WOW!!!

The luxury of not operating in Charleston means you don't have to run a charter every weekend regardless of the currents/tides. And since the tides are usually only conducive for a 3-4 day stretch several times a month (and not always on weekends) :( it is optimal that at least one operator I know ONLY runs charters when the tides/currents are conducive to primo diving conditions.

Sept as it turns out is an odd month. There is only one 3-4 day stretch which is the 13-16th which means traveling on Sunday the 12th and diving 13-15th or 13-16th.

August has one good doable stretch of the 13th-16th and October looks great for 1st-4th.

With the T&C trip the 4th to 11th of Sept I am hesitant to run back to back trips. AND I am not certain most of you would be willing to take off essentially all weekdays to do this trip in Sept. So that leaves either August as an option or early Oct.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you! kamala

Plan for DIVING THE COOPER RIVER IN AUG or SEPT or OCT 2010!!! The trip will be during warm months...but just not sure when. We have to consult the tides schedules but we WILL DO THE COOPER IN 2010.

Be watching for the FINAL DATE IN either AUG/SEPT/OCT! AND this trip will be limited to ONLY 6 DIVERS!!

We've done this trip a couple of times and I love it! I've found HUGE meg teeth, Posted Image colonial artifacts including pipes, pottery and bottles. Posted Image Others have found the same or BETTER! Posted Image I even found a baby mastadon molar! My latest find was a spear point! :)

So is anyone up for doing a 'night dive' in the middle of the day in 30-40 ft max WARM water?

We are looking at putting this trip back on the calendar for 2010. Who's interested?

Oh yeah...its relatively inexpensive too.... fly to Charleston, SC and the trip is around $600-$700 including hotel, breakfast and lunch daily and 4 one hour tank dives DAILY!

This is good news. We can do a total of 6 to 12 divers max counting me and OTWDiver as crew. If we do 12 we'll be doing two boats so the max you'll have on any one boat is 6....suhweet! :)

SingleDivers.com has an 'in' with the operator so we can put this trip on the calendar working around other dates that are not so flexible. The Cooper River offers great diving from May to October so we have some flexibility. I usually seem to gravitate to summer months for overall weather and condition choices.

The trick is to find the 2 weekends a month that the tides allow for 4 one hours dives and avoid the other two weekends when you'll be slapped around like a flag on a poll. :iagree:

I'll ask OTWDiver to do the tide charts for me so I can start to narrow the timeframe down!

Yes there is current but that current sweeps away the sand or silt helping you to see what you are looking for. You will 'work your way' into the current using special techniques that OTWDiver will teach you to do. You will also use a handy device called a river pick which allows you to work you way into the current.

You will be overweighted so you can 'crawl' along the bottom and have your light 'close' to the teeth so you can check for the good stuff!

This is sounding more and more intriguing... Wenchie, do we really have to wait til 2010??? ;)

By the way, just to add to the questions, how deep is the river in the area we'd be hunting?

Yup...this year is already full! Plus I have to FILL EVERY TRIP or SingleDivers.com just won't survive. There is such a small margin on travel that you have to score a homerun every time. That is why these discussions are very important to me. Besides when I ran this trip last year we barely were able to fill it. I take a year off and it looks like interest is back again. The real issue is people think...oh she'll run that trip next year so they go on the one I'm ONLY running this year. Then I can't fill it and so I take it off the calendar. However its an easy trip...fun and inexpensive. So its being looked at to go back on again for next year.

Depth of river is 30-40 ft average with some parts being as deep as 45 or so and some parts being as shallow as 25 ft.

Cooper was definitely a very cool trip. The current is actually very helpful. You don't swim against the current; in fact sometimes down there as you're digging up teeth, you'll be wishing for more current to blow away the silt! OTWDiver runs a tight ship and makes the diving very informative and very fun. He knows exactly what you're going to see at the bottom of that river. You feel like you know it when you hit the bottom. As far as depth..WW is right...but I'll add that my favorite gravel patch was in about 15' of water. I found my favorite 4+" meg tooth there, and TONS of little ones.

Another cool part - I would not have expected this - we had dolphins with us for much of the third day. You don't see them at depth due to the dark, but they hang around the boats as we moved from one site to another. If you've done mostly oceans, the Cooper will help you mix it up a bit, and it will be one of your most interesting dives.
