I have the Master Plan (middle-of-the-road plan)......because it covers what I need it to. I have pretty good health insurance that will cover me outside the US for the non-diving related stuff.

I had Preferred for two years as it fit my policy of "It is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it". When I moved to the island DAN told me the best they could offer was Master so I downgraded to that.

DAN kicks butt and not just for insurance. I am a proud member of that organization for a multitude of reasons.

I have the Preferred. It doesn't cost that much and it includes your dive gear, and trip cancellation or interruption as well. If you had to buy trip insurance under another policy, it would end up costing the same or more.

I had the Standard Plan when I started diving, because it was like carrying the minimum insurance on your car, it allow you to drive your car for less money. Same thing applied for diving, it would allow you to go on dive trips without that much out of pocket expense.... Geeesh back then I was still making payments on my BCD, Regs and Tanks etc... I have moved up one notch to the Master Plan, it seems to run parallel on coverage with the Preferred Plan to a point. I revisited there web site the other day to look for helicopter rides and what was covered and not covered.

Simon is right, DAN does so much more than diving insurance..The Cochran diving computer program comes to mind, plus that all so important Emergency Hot-Line for diving accidents... that I hope nobody ever needs to use.... but if you need to its there and operated by diving professionals.

Ditto all of the above....I joined DAN shortly after getting my first C-Card in 1994 and have since helped with several DAN-sponsored studies (either as a participant, data collector, or methodology consultant). Affiliated with Duke University, they are THE research organization dedicated to furthering the understanding of divers' health-related issues. Largely thanks to DAN, dive medicine is recognized as a legitimite (pardon sp) medical specialty. The impeccable care that we get if, God forbid, we should actually need to be seen at a DAN facility or chamber, reflects the outcomes of this ongoing research. Plus, the hotline is fantastic...no health-related question is too big or too small for these guys and gals!!!

Re membership choice: I have "preferred." I have never used all the bells and whistles of this level of membership, but I like the peace of mind that comes from having them.

That's my 2 psi's.

I had Preferred for two years as it fit my policy of "It is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it".

Same here as the reason I have Preferred.

Couple that with the ongoing dive research that DAN is a part of, and it was an easy choice.

Racer,
I agree those things are Fat, There is a typo in the handbook tho. If you have questions about pre trip information call 866-385-4839 and ask for product # 007824 instead of calling the 919-684-4326 number and tying up a emergency diving operator.

WW,
Can you tell us more about the cochran dive computer program if you have time.

Mike
