The ocean sunfish is the only fish whose girth normally exceeds its length. It's such a poor swimmer that some marine biologists will argue that it should be classified as plankton.

One time, back in the 1970s, I was at a beach in Amagansett, Long Island, New York, and the lifeguards chased everyone from the water because they saw a triangular fin in the water. It turned out to be an ocean sunfish.

More exactly it is a Reef Lizardfish, Synodus variegatus I believe.

Unfortunately I am unable to post a fish in response. :lmao:

OK, here's one. I apologize for the poor quality - it's a vidcap from something I took about 8-10 years ago. Hopefully you all can make it out.

Some variety of Flying Gurnard.... without ocean it was in, difficult to say, but I wager Caribbean... Indo-Pacific ones I have seen are red not blue

Correct - video was shot in the Atlantic off Palm Beach. We had several Gurnard sightings that weekend - more than any other trip that I can remember to the area. Unfortunately I was not able to get decent footage of any with wings fully spread.

It's a filefish...my best guess would be a scrawled filefish.

Rick is correct. It is a filefish, however the color quality in the image make it difficult to tell what species it is.
Which ocean was it taken in?
