I'm sure most of you are familiar with DAN.I joined DAN last fall before my trip to the Cenotes.I also got their ID Tags which I thought was a good way to prevent possible "mistaken ID."& or personal ID if unconcious. Just so happened in St Thomas when I was letting the shop handle my stuff.Another Diver grabbed my fins by mistake.I thought the Medical Insurance was a "Smart " idea.Has anyone had experience with them,or heard of an incident, where they were involved? :teeth:

I'm currently filing with DAN due to my accident in Australia in December.

The details are fairly long, and I intend to cover this topic in another post as soon as I finish filing the insurance paperwork with the idea of informing people of what can be expected.

For now, let's just say that I am very happy that I have DAN Preferred insurance.

I am not sure what having DAN insurance has to do with another diver taking your fins? I would not go on a dive without DAN medical insurance. The cost of the insurance for a year is less than a typical one tank dive and the beneifts are huge in the case of an accident or medical emergency. I have had DAN coverage for the last 16 years. Never had to make a claim but also have never had a problem with them.

On the Belize trip WW was talking about her first SingleDivers.com trip (we're all single, no couples, we'd like separate checks please, repeat 3 or 4 more times.) when she didn't require insurance and somebody had an incident that they thought might have been DCS.

I'll let her post more because she's had experience with people (not always part of our group) that have had issues on trips.

I think it's smart because it can help cover costs that your existing medical insurance (if you have any) won't.

Hope I never need to use it, but I'll continue to have DAN dive insurance as long as I dive!

Be aware that many personal health insurance policies 1) don't cover any medical treatment outside the USA, or are not accepted by the local doctor, 2) don't cover dive accidents, or 3) don't cover EVAC or Chamber treatments.

Who wants to risk it? Not me.....

I have had DAN preferred Dive Insurance since the day i got certified, and it is worth every dollar. I would rather have it and not need it then not have it and really needed it. Being in Health care I know what alot of this costs and it adds up quickly.

here are some rough costs of DCS hit that you could be billed with

Transportation
Helicopter EMS evacuation $15K+

Fixed Wing EMS Evacuation $8,000 (Turbo Prop ie Beechcraft KingAir 90 or similar) Plus miles, supplies (oxygen IV fluids, meds, etc). If a medical equipped jet is needed you can look at 30K+ and that's inside the US, international you dont even want to know.

Ground EMS Transportation $800+ depending on the level of care required (plus supplies and mileage)

Beyond that remember a evacuation could include all three of these possibly depending on the location, time and distance.

Treatment costs
ER Eval $1K and up
Hyperbaric treatment 1K-15K per treatment
ICU Room Thousands per day, last quote i heard locally it was 4K+ a day
Normal Hospital room 1k-2k per day
Drs and specialist fees - costs are all over the map
Rehab - dependent on whats needed but very expensive as rehab can be a very slow process.

To put it this way you could pay for a hundred years of DAN preferred plan and you still wouldn't begin to cover a DCS bill. I have seen complete treatment records for DCS cases and there cost associated with treatment but HIPPA prevents me from saying.

When I flew Fixed Wing TurboProp Air Ambulance transfers the $8K was the wholesale price to State of NV, Kaiser, Veterans Admin. Retail was over $14K. We had 1 lady Cindy at the office who was responsible for calling everybody that owed money and get $5-25 out of them each week. Trust me you don't want her calling you every week for the rest of your life.

:cool1: I am glad to hear everyone concurs,DAN is a good idea.I was just curious about any real deals and the experience. Thanks PPM. As far as the Diver thing,I only mentioned it as the ID Tags are a integrated part of their membership ,and should anyone be in a non functioning state they would know who you are and that your a DAN member.. And yes Tammy & pilotdiver the regular insurance co's are not user friendly, when it comes to "our" world. ;) everybody!

I thought the ID tags were extra... the two medical info ones and the gear tags I have ordered did not come with my membership. Are they including them for new membership sign-ups?

The DAN tags are extra and not included. you can order them at the same time you do your insurance renewal online.

Nope not a bus...just underwater! Been in Belize Baby....

And even still your response confuses me but I think you are running a bunch of DAN related services together and asking if anyone else has either used DAN or these services.

If thats the case you'll find that many of our members certainly have and DAN or Dive Assure or other DIVING SPECIFIC insurance is required on ALL OF OUR TRIPS.

If I did not have DAN Insurance I WOULD BE DEAD!,
Two years ago I suffered a catastrophic dive accident while diving in Mexico. If it were not for my friends from Single Divers & DAN's ability to fly me out during a hurricane, there is no question that I would not be "talking" to you today. Yes I had other medical insurance, but they would never have been able to react & coordinate my rescue in time to save my life. ANY QUESTIONS ?? My advice, at the very least, buy every bit of insurance DAN Has to offer.
It has taken me 2 years to make sense out of my accident, details to follow later this week

Love to All, Barb
