Main Runway Construction at JFK

Looks like it might be ugly to fly through this airport for the next 4 months, and may impact airlines that use it as a hub, like JetBlue.

Maybe the better question for people to ask is why it's going to take 4 months to repair a runway.
How long should it take to rip up nearly three miles of asphalt and replace it with enough concrete to allow a fully loaded A380 to land on it, all while having to dodge planes taking off, landing, or even just taxiing to get people, machines, and supplies to the work site? Plus it's being widened from 150ft to 200ft, or the equivalent of approximately 12 lanes of traffic to 16 lanes.
I don't see an issue with the amount of time it takes. They could have done it only at night, but it would have taken on the order of 3 years to complete. Plus air traffic is down, so the airlines are scheduling fewer flights. Now seems like a good time to do it.

Rick,
The runway being repaired is over 14,000 feet long! It is an alternative landing site for the space shuttle. They are converting the asphalt surface to a concrete surface.
In addition, JetBlue, Delta and American are maintaining their reduced winter schedules through the scheduled maintenance, and not using their increased # flights summer schedules until the runway is finished. It has to be done sometime, and it is said that this is the time with the least impact and the most likely good weather to try to keep it on schedule.....
I will be a pain, but it must be done.....

Okay, I guess I stand corrected. My judgement may have been a little prejudiced by what I've seen with some of the construction projects I've near where I live. Having done as-built environmental reporting for a construction project, I have a pretty good idea how fast a construction crew can make progress when they want to.

P.S.--On another subject, I've suddenly lost the ability to choose my fonts or insert small icons (like smilies and the American flag) into my text. Does anyone know how I can correct this?

I have lost the ability to edit my posts after I have posted them... but my flag still works.

To get it working again you might try clicking the refresh looking button in the top right hand corner of the post editor. That switches between standard and rich text editors. It was the cure for what was ailing me when I was having difficulties. All my smilies work too.
Edit: yep edit works too.
No such luck here.
