Greg - Finning to back up is not that hard it just requires practice. For me alot of the action is in the ankles in a motion similar to trying to flip sand with your foot on the beach. This isnt only with force fins but also with other fin types as well.

It comes in handy when in tight places were using your hands isnt a good idea (silty or inside wrecks)

Robin - I must be really be a bad diver if I can switch between fins like a do :teeth:

Dan,From what I was told it's main application was Cave diving as well...To back ones self out of a "dead end".I'd like to see a training video on this if possible.Does anyone have a lead on this.Going from memory is hard to do the visual manuvers. After only seeing it done once.. :teeth:

THANK YOU! :) KATE P .I noticed the type of fins used,as well.I think Robin, you have the right or most common thought. It's independent/personal preference ,for the most part.

I am a frog kick queen...used to use jetfins but heavy for travel. Tried OMS Slipstreams and at first hated them cuz my feet seemed to just waffle around. But the weight of about 1 pound kept me using them and I love them for all but current. That is why I tried everything else I could find including splits and blades and even Peter's fins. I hated the splits because I could feel the fin falling on itself and that was unnerving in the water for me as I felt I was touching something. When I tried stiffer splits I could not master the technique to use them properly.

When I dive wet I use a blade and when I dive dry I use my OMS Slipstreams. (In fact I just bought Scott's as they fit my foot perfectly and do not hurt so its probably the size of the instep that is the problem.)

Fins are ALWAYS a personal preference and usually compensate for style, power or lack thereof, technique etc. I used to dive force fins and loved them...but in those days I did a more bicycle kick style and they compensated for that kick style.

Now I frog kick sooooooooooooooooo much that I can hardly flutter kick correctly to make headway in current although Peter's training/technique he showed me in Belize has been a lifesaver many times now!
