Looking to take my newly OW cert'ed son out to get wet (1st dives after his checkouts at Beaver Lake, AR) and looking to stay close to home - will order him a passport next week - and thinking about a lake or dive park around Dallas (hmmmmm...Texas is like a foriegn country - does he need a passport to cross back into OK????). Was thinking about Athens Scuba Park, Clear Springs or Mansfield Lake... anyone from down that way have any recomendations. Would be willing to go further afield too if the recomendation sounds good enough... Might even try to get a couple of the other KS SDers to tag along...

I recommend Clear Springs Scuba Park.

Good training lake, and there's stuff to gawk at in the water to keep you interested.

When would you be here?

We visited Mammoth Lake in Freeport (well, "Clute, Texas", south of Houston) a couple of months ago, as my son got his Jr. Open Water and Jr. Advanced Open Water there. It is FULL of things to see, and one part I liked for him, was that there were ropes attached to various items, so if your navigational skills are weak, then this was a way to see stuff in lake (low visibility) waters. Having said that, the visibility was quite good for a lake dive. There are also platforms, and a full dive shop. Directly next door is a restaurant for a long surface interval.

Thinking the weekend of Sept 18, Oct 9th or the 16th. Pretty flexible. Will you be running classes out there either of those weekends?

Will keep that in mind. I have a cousin in Houston that last dove 4-5 years ago and that is thinking about giving it a shot again... might be a good place to meet up with her.

Don't know what it was like 4-5 years ago, but I heard it is remarkably different. The folks have spent quite a bit of effort to improve the visibility.

Can anyone join Scrappykidz and his son on any of these dates? It would be fun to get a small group together for a dive day in either location!

I probably can and I strongly recommend Clear Springs for his first dives. I think I will be there next Sunday but I will be in class so probably not available.

Scott,

Looking at the 2nd or 3rd weekend of Oct - will know for sure after lunch tomorrow... Would love any company or maybe a run out for dinner. Son is 17 so any HH would have to be family friendly...

If that's a definite go date then I can arrange my affairs accordingly; I can even bring my portable grill to ensure hot food.

How about it, fellow Texans? This sound like a good day for a gathering at CSSP?

That looks like a firm date. Any recommendations on hotel/motel near the site? Just my son & I so nothing fancy. Going to google this weekend but if anyone knows of a good spot, let me know.

Try and find something near the Tanger Outlet Mall off I20 and I think you'll be fine.
