I heard yesterday of something that doesn't please me. A local instructor, and indeed the head of the local organisation supposedly supervising instructors and all dive guides, has just conducted a free class for local kids, mostly aged 10-14. He awarded PADI certification at the end (he is also a NAUI instructor). There were apparently 28 people, mostly kids, and the instructor had one certified assistant. That ratio makes it legal under local law but IMO still crazy. He conducted dive 2 to 68 feet in the ocean - I don't know what depths the other dives were to. Remember - most of the group were kids 10-14.

Any views? I don't have definitive enough information to take it further, and of course it qualifies as "heresay".

Hearsay won't cut it when trying to prove the claim--you're going to have to get the participants themselves as well as the single assistant to state for the record that they were put into the water simultaneously by this instructor in a manner that violated organizational Standards and Practices.

The consideration that local laws allow this may or may not have some bearing.

IF you intend to pursue this, be certain to get everything in writing, place the originals in an undeniably safe place should the need arise to produce something other than copies and be prepared to weather a storm from the defenders of the instructor in question in your local dive community.

You should also be prepared to see nothing at all happen at the training organization level. Scuba has a political component, as does many endeavors involving human beings.

Even common sense dictates that too many divers were in the water with too few instructors...assuming this happened as stated of course but most likely something odd happened...where there is smoke there is fire.

Therein lies the problem--is there even independently verifiable smoke?

All we have is a second-hand retelling of an event that Peter himself did not witness that would indicate a Standards violation may have occurred. His upward battle is to verify that it happened as told to him and obtain positive irrefutable proof of same and present it to the certifying organization involved--which may or may not act on that information and proof. :banghead:
