Regarding gift cards expiring:
They can expire, depending on the terms of the agreement/rules under which the card is sold. Many cards will have a fee attached that whittles away at the balance on them until nothing is left. This is apparently to encourage use as quickly as possible.
IIRC, there is at least one state out there that has a law to prevent those fees from being applied, as well as 'use by' expiration dates.
Lastly, they can 'expire' along with the business if it has declared bankruptcy/closed doors permanently. Holders of Borders bookstore gift cards learned this the hard way during the demise of that chain, for example.

With my company GC's do not expire. For me it also depends on the person. I like getting a gift card if it were to my LDS or some place that I could buy dive gear. My wife would in no way be able to buy me anything dive related. Gift cards to Starbucks or a favorite eatery are always good. Other wise I want something to unwrap...I pretty much feel the same about giving them. Sometimes a gift card to a restaurant is special because the recipient may never splurge and go to eat there even if they really wanted to. With a gift card they have no excuse..:-)

Hey Parrotman...your post makes a lot of sense...and I broke down this year and got some gift cards either because that is what the recipient "REALLY" wanted or because I knew they would never splurge and go to the restaurant I gave them the card for.
