That's an interesting story but the coating they mentioned that some of the emeralds had on them makes me think they were dumped there recently. Hopefully there will be a followup in the coming years when more is known.

This story does not pass my smell test.

The biggest problem as I see it--the emeralds are all sitting on top of the sand, literally littering the bottom in plain sight as shown in the video. Since SD here runs trips with the Atocha crowd, think of how much trouble they have bringing emeralds up from their site using an airlift, and you'll understand what I mean here.

Next problem? I'm a former jeweler and was also trained by the Gemological Institute of America--the piles of material I saw in the video appeared to me to be very pale, and of low-quality--hardly gem material at all.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how this all shakes out. I do not see this as ending well for his investors.

Possible they were dropped by drug runners and they coincidently were near other ship wreckage???

Anyone else have a theory?

When have you ever heard or seen a drug smuggler running around with a cache of uncut emeralds outside of Hollywood fiction? Bringing uncut gems into the US is not a problem...it would make more sense to dump the drugs rather than the emeralds.

Considering the story as presented, he was able to use the map he allegedly purchased to find the site relatively quickly--what was all the money he has allegedly raised used for then?

No, I suspect that the answer is already shown within the confines of the video story reported; this man is taking investors for a ride, currently to the tune of USD $10 million and counting. He is using CBS to further that effort by conning them into free coverage.

Actually people do use gems and uncut gems as currency. That way they can have a great deal on money in a small package and it is harder to track.. Drugs (heroine tar) have been known to be smuggled in "uncut" stones, so customs agents do tend to look at them a bit closer now these days.

It is not a completely far fetched idea.
