With this Brand being a HOT Topic at most of the LD's..I have been toying with the idea of a 800 or as suggested by the site a 1200 for video recording. They have a good range .It has all the advantages of size and weight and holds a charge for a good length of time.Adding to that it is chargeable directly to the unit.. Had this light been out when I got my Sealife strobe I would have been there in a sec.

I am wondering if any of the members here own one and what is their opinion..Posted Image
My other question: Could one use the video light as a light for stills?I know some use the video & grab a still from their video.
I know it's a question of what are you going to use it for? I'm trying to lose the large Sealife strobe and reduce wt.

Greg every picture I take is with a Sola light. I use the 1200's and have recently gotten the 2000's. Don't go less than 1200 IMO if you want them for pictures as well as video. Strobes are great but I love the flexibility of the lights....pictures or video and what you see is what you get. Plus we have a partnership with them so can get our members some great perks.

K, I appreciate your comment. When you mention the flexibility of light,I assume you are also talking about it's slide adjustment in light..?Or having a choice of either Strobe or Video?.Could you send e mail on a perk price on the 1200 to me..The other thought I'm pondering is do I sell my Monster size sealife strobe? And go with the replacement of the Sola..Decsion's,decsions....

Flexibility means the same light does two purposes. Now keep in mind the amazing pictures you see by amazing photographers are all done via strobe. Strobes have the power to give you the POP you can't get with anything else. But.... they also have a limtited range and you can miss the shot...and they don't always sync up etc etc etc.

So no don't sell your strobe if you wish to be a serious photographer...work with both the sola's and the strobe until you are happy with your results. (Practice on land to help you learn the power of your strobe)

The sola's are not cheap. The MAP for a 1200 is $699 BUT they last a really long time if you take decent care of them. (I abuse mine and they still last a long time)

They perform multi-duty...taking both pictures and video and you don't have to have an enormous rig to get really good results. The same platform serves multi-duties. Wanna take a picture...you can. Wanna film a turtle swimming you can. Wanna film under a ledge pop the lights on and you now look like a pro!

I'll send you a pm with options. Kamala

Greg-
I recently had the opportunity to meet with the Light & Motion [Sola] rep through my LDS, which had organized a meeting of interested customers. He was very helpful in discussing my particular situation, using a Sola Photo 600 w/a GoPro2. On a recent trip I ended up with a bright circle of light illuminating my subjects [ornate & robust ghost pipefish], but the rest of the frame was total darkness. His suggestion was to get the Sola Light 800, which has a 600 lum setting, to use with my existing 600 in order to illuminate the entire frame. Also a 10% discount was given on all orders placed during the meeting. Maybe your LDS can organize a similar meeting.

The charger comes with it. We can also honor that same discount since we are having an online meeting as a club. ;)

Greg the chgr comes with it. However the mounting bracket to adjustable arms or with the ball mount do not come with it. You have to buy them for approx $20 each.

Sola also offers a great tray for your lights that will hold your camera and/or go pro.

I use 3 sola 800 since hd video are so large. 1 on each side and one aim low an center to cover everything with no hot spot. I think it is better to have multiple low power light than a single hight power one, since you can better cover the intire scene.

I also have two strobes for stills.

I need a truck to transport my camera ;-)

Bar..
Merci beaucoupe.I am thinking about the 800.I first would like to try one under depth conditions b/4 buying.I have a local guy that will lend me his. I don't want to become a erector set going down to take photos...It is a awesome light by comparison to some on the market now..

Aye, caramba! They came out with a 2000? Sheesh, the 1200 makes it like daylight, especially when multiple divers are using them!!! Don't get me wrong, I'm crazy about these lights & plan on ordering a variety. The 2000 just seems like overkill, to me. Keep in mind, though, that I carry NO photo equipment. K, did you use it in Bonaire? How has your experience been with it? I know I missed the night dive because of my back, etc. Just interested in your feedback.

The 2000 is too much for night. The 1200 on LOW is perfect and even then it blows some things out. (I'll try to post some pics to show you.)

The value of the higher intensity lights is burn time ....all have 65 mins of burn time on high. If high is 800 on the Sola 800 then you get the same output on med on the 1200's or low on the 2000's.

Plus when you want to light up a good portion of the reef for that extra special shot... then you can do it with the higher out put lights.

I think the 1200's are the best overall.

I really have my eye on that tech light. I've been around a few of those DIR guys who strongly advocate the cabled hand lights with the big battery packs on the waist. These compact rechargeables look so much more compact and with the advantage of eliminating the cable as a snag point. Is there any reason anyone can think of for not going with a Sola for tech diving? Outside of the obvious like extremely long deco dives that may outlast the burn time?
