We are looking to put together a trip specifically to hunt/kill/shoot lionfish. You can be an experienced hunter or learn on the trip. How many people would be interested?

We could enjoy some great eating, certainly lots of fun and we'll do our part to help preserve the fish populations in the Caribbean for the next generation!

Anyone up for a trip like this??? You could hunt as much or as little as you like!

I thought that was one of the big plusses of the Roatan trip last year was the program that they put on, including the in water training with the coconuts.

That is partially where we got the idea. There are some venues that REALLY have a lionfish issue and I have been in communications with them about a true hunting trip. Of course non-hunters could come but I think it would be a great draw for those who REALLY REALLY love to hunt or would just like to try it!

We had a serious lionfish hunter on the last Belize trip. I think he had invented a capture box that folded up when not in use. Obviously some venues would be better than others. And some places have lionfish hunting competitions that might make it even more enticing for serious lionfish hunters.

Hey Mike... six venues so far include:

Roatan - Already have a trip with a lionfish workshop and hunting element
NC - Already have a trip and hunters are welcome but have not positioned it as a hunting trip
Mayaguana - A group went last week and killed 672 in one week
Dominica - In the marine park they are a bit deeper but in the areas that we don't regularly dive...they are EVERYWHERE.
San Salvadore - Went there and they are mostly a bit deeper but there for the killing
Xcalak (Mexico) - Went there and they were everywhere and easy to kill

Would consider for Dominica. Would love to do San Sal again but it won't work if it's NYE 2014/2015.

Very good idea ! I asked about this for Bonaire in 2012, but it was complicated. Nevertheless, I was a spotter for the hunter/divemaster.

"In the marine park they are a bit deeper but in the areas that we don't regularly dive...they are EVERYWHERE. "

I think this applies virtually everywhere. I've personally seen this in Roatan, but seems to apply everywhere else too. I think in places where controls are in place, they are doing a good job of reducing their impact in the dive area. But once you get outside of the regular dive sites, whether its by going deeper or by going by another route, you are going to find this.

Yep George...that about sums it up.

Pascal... Bonaire is still very tied to too many 'controls' and so will suffer accordingly.

I am looking at places where they have very little 'government intervention' and have a HUGE desire to help solve the problem.

Hunting was a major reason I chose Roatan, and the option to do so would up the odds I would choose any particular trip. So yes, very interested in any trips that are hunting friendly!

North Carolina (definitely would do a 2014 trip there), Mayaguana, Dominica, Xcalak (Mexico) are all possible options for me especially if the hunting is an option.
