This past Saturday, I was interviewed to work, (volunteer) at the Shedd Aquarium.I was wondering if any SD members have done volunteer work for any of the Aquariums near them and what their experiences have been..I am excited to have been chosen and get the opportunity to learn more about the Aquatic World we all embrace.
The one opportunity that is available is in the Oceanarium. This is where the Beluga whales & porpise are . It will be cleaning the tanks and maybe some other duties.Temps are in the 60's.

I have no experience to share but I'd like to hear others' experience as well. I've tried to get into the Baltimore program, but I have never had anyone even return my e-mails.

Where is the Shedd aquarium?

I hope you have a great time.

I will answer both Gywn & Clint.
Thanks for the encouragement ,Gwyn

To both of you.I would say , Patience and persistance. From what I understand there is a long wait,(here) for the Shedd Aquarium.I would assume that the same exsits in most of the Aquariums in the US. Many are called but few are selected. They are very selective. It is located along Lake Shore Drv. in Chicago,IL.

I know it will be a commitment.I hope it will work with a schedule of my work and their need..I'll let you SD know what happens.

It is a very cool experience but they usually want very experienced divers and those with VERY flexible read... open schedules. So if you don't have a lot of time to give them and you aren't 1000% persistent...then its nearly impossible to get a call back.

Good luck Greg...its a great op and I hope you close it!

good insight Kamala. Maybe it's something I should think about after I retire.

I agree with Kamala about experience and flexibility. Some of them, like the one here in Denver, partner with a Local Dive Shop, so having an in with them also really helps.

Greg, what are the requirements for the Shedd Aquarium as far as diving?

For the VA Aquarium you need your AOW certification and 25 dives. (10 of which within the last year)

Hi Clint,
They mentioned it is a + if you have Rescue..I beleive they said 100 dives min.The Dir. mentioned that for the colder water, or the Oceanarium. You have some "recent" dives done in the 60 Deg range.I'm crossing my fins on this one. It's the Beluga tank area and hope I can take the temp. My 8/7 semi dry recently in Galboa was ok..They did say I could bring my Rx mask and or Wet suite, but MUST sanitize them..Other than giving them 3-4 personal references and some personal information thru the security check , looking over your log book & C cards.Thats about it.
They also seem to be very safety oriented.I'm still waiting hear and wondering when I'll be notified.

Unfortunately, tryouts for Fall volunteers will be held while I am in Roatan. They will keep my application on hand and keep me in mind for the Spring.

Clint,
Hang in there :( .I think I'd rather be in Roatan than a Aquarium any day..
