Passengers injured as severe turbulence strikes US Airways flight

A US Airways flight bound for Orlando was forced to turn back to Philadelphia after severe turbulence caused injuries to a number of passengers and flight crew.

The Airbus A330 encountered turbulence soon after take-off at about 17,000 feet over Delaware.

Three people, including two flight crew were taken to hospital and a further three suffered minor injuries after entering a "patch of severe turbulence," according to US Airways spokesman Bill McGlashen.

Passenger Mark Pensiero described the scene to local media: "There was a very brief period in time where the plane felt like it wasn't in control and was being moved by some pretty intense forces."

He also said the pilot then asked for anyone with medical training onboard to attend to the injured.

An airport official said it landed safely in Philly and all passengers were able to disembark normally.

The seat belt signs were switched on when the turbulence struck.
