Just a guess, but was it founded by Moses Austin? Moses was the father of Stephen Austin of Texas fame. Stephen was born in Austinville.

Well, William the Conqueror was my childhood hero.... Kind of partial to that time (1066) up until the Tudors. I've got a soft spot for Richard III- remember history is always written to suit the victors!Just a guess, but was it founded by Moses Austin? Moses was the father of Stephen Austin of Texas fame. He arose out of adversity- born a bastard in an age where legitimacy was everything when it came to succession, survived several attempts on his life as a boy. He took a tremendous risk invading an England firmly united behind Harold Godwinson. Most critically, as a result of the Norman invasion, the English language developed from the Norse-based Germanic language that it was into the rich Romance influenced language that we speak today. Not to mention, the Doomsday Book- taxation was regulated in a more uniform way as a result of it's compilation. Also, would we have ever gotten the Magna Carta if the invasion hadn't taken place? William's invasion of England totally impacted the entire course of European history & specifically English (& subsequently American) history...Why was he your hero?
OK, back to ditzy blonde mode! :anna:
BTW, I'm with Blublood- I NEED spellcheck!!!
