Hello Dive Buddies,

Can you advise me on what resources I can use to learn about the marine life in the areas in which I dive? For example, I dive Monterey and Channel Islands, and I know that I can buy those laminated cards in local dive shops that provide info on the local fish. But there must be more resources than that. Can anyone refer a good website/book/dvd that will help me learn more about the marine life that I will find in specific dive locations? I am investing in a new underwater videocam, and it would be so much more beneficial if I could understand and identify the beautiful life that I am photographing underwater. I welcome your replies. By the way, I have my eye on the Bonaire trip coming in November 2016 so I will certainly be wanting to learn and identify the fish/marine life that we will see on that trip as well.

Thank you in advance!!!

There is an entire series of books for most parts of the world Reef fish identification and coral identification. I forget what the third one is. i have the three book set for the Caribbean. it came as a box set. They also make the cards and pocket books you can dive with. Google it or check it out on Amazon.  they are pretty good.

Each wreck has a tale to tell about its life and its demise.

If you are observant while diving in dark places listen to the account each has to tell, You cannot come away unaffected.

Thanks Jerrymxz,

I also was searching for some apps that would serve this purpose. While there are many apps for the IPhone and Android phones, most are geared toward dive sites, logs, transferring data to your dive computer, and the like, I did find one app that is specific for identifying marine life. The app is found at ReefID.org. Currently, it is available for the IPhone only, with info on Caribbean marine life. But they have an Android version in beta stage, and may be expanding on marine life in other areas. This is encouraging news!  I just wanted to add this to our post, in case anyone would like to check it out.

Hello Renee, and apologies for the delayed response. I have all kinds of fish ID books, laminated cards, and even multi-page wrist-mounted fish ID cards. What I like to do now is Google "fish identification pictures" and add the region, then click "more pictures." You'll be blown away with all the fantastic, free resources out there. In addition to the usual cards, there are games and quizzes to help you learn. For example, here is one to get you started on Bonaire: https://quizlet.com/...re-flash-cards/
